9 2009 EFFECTS OF INPUT METHOD AND BODY POSTURE ON WORK FATIGUE AND PERFORMANCE FOR TYPING CHINESE TEXT H.C. Wu C.B. Yang Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, Chaoyang University of Technology ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance and psychophysical fatigue for Typing Chinese Text. Fifteen subjects participated in this study voluntarily. The independent variables were Chinese input method (New phonetic notation, Boshiamy, Cangjie), elbow angle ( ) and body posture (sitting and lying). Four dependent measures were change in Critical Fusion Frequency (CFF), typing performance and subjective fatigue. Each subject used his/her master Chinese input method to perform six experimental trials with six different body-posture and elbow-angle combinations, respectively. Each subject spent 180 min for the experiment. Each trial took 30 min. The results indicated the input method had a significant effect on the measured key-stroke. The Cangjie group had the most total key-stroke numbers, followed by Boshiamy and New phonetic notation groups. In order to avoid the CTD (Cumulative Trauma Disorders) disease derived from great key-stroke numbers, the Boshiamy input method is suggested. It has less key-stroke numbers, quicker input speed, lower error rate and shorter movement of the fingers. The input speed and key-stroke number were significantly influenced by the body posture. The elbow angle preference, feelings of tenseness, back load, arm and back pains were also affected significantly by body posture. The sitting posture is more comfortable for the most subjective ratings. The mental work load was lower in lying than in sitting posture. The back was more comfortable, but the arms were more discomfort in lying posture. The elbow angle had a significant effect on key-stroke number. The angle of elbow is relatively good for 90 and 120 degrees. This experiment proves that the best angle of elbow is not only 90 degrees. The sitting-posture typing is better in the overall performance and fatigue. But the workstation with lying posture could reduce the back load, offering another choice for the people who are unsuitable to sit and type for a long time. Keywords: psychophysical fatigue; input method; body posture; elbow angle; typing tasks
