1 Room 205, Hangar 5 Annexe Building 707 S.A.A Technical Area Jones Road Tel: Fax: info@ausa.co.za Web: Published for AUSA members SEPTEMBER 2010 S AA pilot gets final warning for k-word The South African Airways pilot overheard using a racist word while in the cockpit of his aircraft is off the hook. He will not be fired, as was recommended by a disciplinary hearing held four weeks ago. Instead, the senior captain received a final written warning over the incident in June. The Sunday Times revealed last week that the pilot had uttered the k-word over the interphone system, unaware that it was live. He was reported to management. Last week the SAA Pilots' Association (Saapa) said it would appeal to the CEO for clemency for the pilot. Saapa said yesterday the sensitivity and nature of the offence had made it a difficult issue for the association, as a multiracial union, to deal with. "We are grateful that the CEO (of SAA) has taken note of Saapa's application, supported by (trade union) Satawu. Our member has been issued with a final written warning which will lead to instant dismissal in the event of any offence of any nature, valid for the rest of his airline career. SAA confirmed the pilot had been rehired. 03 October by Roger Makings 1

3 The strength of the trade unions lies in the fact that its campaigns are issue-focused and therefore appeal directly to its target members. The shop steward structures on the floor serve two major purposes: they ensure that workers interests are articulated, and that agreements with employers are implemented. The floor structures also ensure that discipline and unity of purpose is maintained among the workforce. This benefits employers, as they interact with their employees through structures that enjoy legitimacy among the workers, thereby ensuring a relatively stable industrial environment. Employers and trade unions have, over the years, cultivated a co-operative working relationship that has created a less strained working environment. Among the gains the unions have registered over the years is the concession by employers that unilateral decision-making is undemocratic. As we promised to bring you the Five stages of Addictions Five Stages of Addiction 1. Early exposure. Most guys who get addicted to porn start early. They see the stuff when they are very young, and it gets its foot in the door. 2. Addiction. Later comes addiction. You keep coming back to porn. It becomes a regular part of your life. You're hooked. You can't quit. 3. Escalation. After a while, escalation begins. You start to look for more and more graphic porn. You start using porn that would have disgusted you when you started. Now it excites you. 4. Desensitization. Eventually, you start to become numb. Even the most graphic, degrading porn doesn't excite you anymore. You become desperate to feel the same thrill again but can't find it. 5. Acting out sexually. At this point, many men make a dangerous jump and start acting out sexually. They move from the paper and plastic images of porn to the real world rape a woman. 3
4 S econd chance for a first impression I've always been led to believe you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Sounds obvious enough and in most cases it's probably one hundred percent true most of the time. But then again, I've also learned over time that although you cannot go back and make a brand new start, you can really make a brand new end. It simply means that just because something happened in the beginning, it doesn't have to remain that way, or define how things turn out. You see, first impressions are the point at which people form perceptions about you. It's almost an instinctive thing, where people create this impression so that they learn how to deal with you in the future. If you come across as a nice friendly person in the beginning, they'll expect you to be like that most of the time, and therefore will act accordingly towards you. Impressions though are nothing more than what they are defined as. Take a look at most definitions and you'll see impression described as, "an effect, feeling, or image retained as a cons e q u e n c e o f e x p e r i e n c e. " It doesn't say that an impression is reality. It is more likely a made up image of something. The problem comes in when we start to believe impressions as the only reality. This is when a person does something, and we form an impression of them, and we start to categorise the person without giving them a fair chance to prove or disprove the impression. If it's a good impression it will work in your favour until you screw up. If however, you start off with a bad impression, it's a really tough job to get people to accept that you are better than what they think. Look at this thing practically. Right now, whether you're a sports fan or not, you'll recognise that certain sport stars have a reputation for anything from being cheats, to being fair players or sometimes even thugs. Every time they run onto a field, we almost expect this behaviour from them. Chances are they'll try and tell you they are different, especially if they are seen as thugs. But you can't deny that others, especially referees take note of these impressions, perceptions and reputations, and they act towards these sports stars with that in mind. A player with a reputation for being a thug is more likely to be penalised than one who is not seen that way. Even if they may be somewhat innocent. Now think of this in your job situation. It doesn't matter whether you're applying for a new job, or even if you're just trying to make a good impression in your current job. The question is, do you have a good idea of what other people think of you? Have you made a good, positive first impression? Or are you going to have to work at turning around a negative perception of yourself? By John Mullins 20 July

AUSA support the fact that motorbikes can park in a garage that is intended for a car until the bike parking is sorted out. We are in the process of investigation the fact of having one big motorbike parking area at the bottom of the visitors parking at SRO gate or inside at the SRO gate as well as a roofed area only for motor bikes at the train gate. Many people enter our lives for just a little while; others pause and plant flowers in our hearts that con- tinue to bloom forever. I am passionate about my goals and I trust in my ability to get them done. Note: AUSA Shopstewards meeting will be held on 29 October 2010 from 11h00 till 12h00 in the Auditorium in Hangar 8 The Editor- 5
