2 European Quality of Life Survey Rounds 2003, 2007, 2011 (next 2016) 3 rd EQLS (2011): Target population Fieldwork period Sampling type Sample stratification F2F interview type Resident population of 18+ years living in private households, 34 countries Sept 11 Feb 12 for EU27 (20 N=1000 countries and 7 larger sample countries) May-July 2012: HR, IS, FYROM, ME, KO, RS, TR Random probability sampling: 15 EU countries (5 name-based, 10 household registers) + Iceland Random route sampling: 12 EU and 6 non-eu countries By region and urbanisation level (except MT) CAPI: 20 EU countries and Macedonia and Iceland PAPI: 7 EU countries and 5 non-eu countries
3 Eurofound s conceptual framework of measuring quality of life in EQLS Scope that people have to attain their goals. Quality of life is measured by objective as well subjective indicators. Quality of life as an overarching frame that entails concepts at level of individual, family, community, and society. EQLS is based on a multi-dimensional concept of QoL: Goes beyond focus on living conditions or resources, The survey covers broad spectrum of domains of life (employment, housing, family, health, community, participation in society, socioeconomic (in)security); and analyses interrelationship between domains (such as work, family, health and wellbeing); Addresses quality of society: trust, perceived intergroup tensions, quality of public and neighbourhood services.

15 Summing up Quality of public services: Is a pervasive factor of many dimensions of individual wellbeing and has an important effect on cohesion (institutional trust) Questions for future research: What do people mean by quality of services? Study access, fairness, and effectiveness Strengthen the study of quality of society by searching for patterns (particular combination of dimensions) Was it automatic stabilisers of the public services OR the cohesion and social capital that helped preserve subjective well-being during the crisis?
