2 Women, Michael Gurian, 2010, Psychology, 303 pages. "This is an updated edition of a book previously published as Mothers, Sons, and Lovers (Shambhala Publications, 1994)"--T.p. verso.. A modern classic of Jungian psychology, The Hero Within has helped hundreds of thousands of people enrich their lives by revealing how to tap the power of the archetypes that exist within. Drawing from literature, anthropology, and psychology, author Carol S. Pearson clearly defines six heroic archetypes the Innocent, the Orphan, the Wanderer, the Warrior, the Altruist, and the Magician and shows how we can use these powerful guides to discover our own hidden gifts, solve difficult problems, and transform our lives with rich sources of inner strength. This book will speak deeply to the evolving hero in all of us and reverberate through every part of our lives. With poignant wisdom and prolific examples, it gives us enduring tools to help us develop our own innate heroic gifts the Orphan's resilience, the Wanderer's independence, the Warrior's courage, the Altruist's compassion, the Innocent's faith, and the Magician's abiding power. Carol S. Pearson, Ph.D., is the Director of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership and a Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Her publications include The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By Educating the Majority: Challenging Tradition in Higher Education, co-edited by Donna L. Shavlik and Judith G. Touchton); Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes that Help Us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World; Magic At Work: Camelot, Creative Leadership and Everyday Miracles; The Hero and the Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes, co-authored by Margaret Mark; Mapping the Organizational Psyche: A Jungian Theory of Organizational Dynamics and Change, co-authored by John Corlett; and What Story Are You Living? Co-authored by Hugh Marr. Her books are widely translated. She lives with her husband of 33 years close to her three married children and four grandchildren. This is one of my all-time favorite books, and one of my favorite books to recommend to people. Pearson explains the Hero and the Heroic Archetypes (Warrior, Wanderer, etc.) in a clear and down-to-earth way. This is the easiest, most straightfoward, introduction I have found to Jungian and archetypal psychology. It presents powerful life-altering ideas in a readily accessible format. This book is an excellent introduction to Jungian thought. It is excellent for anyone who feels "stuck" in life. It is wonderful for people who want to understand themselves and others more deeply, especially with regard to developing higher possibilities. It is a book which helps you discover, and encourages you to pursue, what is most admirable within you. This book really helped me to embrace the different stages in life and showed me how to grow into who I want to be. It not only restored my faith in "This to shall pass", but showed me how and why. It helped me to accept the lessons I needed to know then and now. It is a book I give to friends when they hit the wall. There is nothing better I can do for them. From the perspective of an educator who deals with students who range from young adult to fify somethings in a community college setting I found this an invaluable resource. I feel the work is of immese value as it always requires that you evaluate your current perspective and superimpose it upon those your are dealing with. If one can read through this text without repositioning their own parameters it would amazing. "The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By," by Carol S. Pearson, Ph.D., continues to have a significant message for all adults undergoing personal development. This is an excellent, and should be a primary, resource for persons engaged in their own life-journey, for students of archetypal pathways, and for counselors, teachers (of adults), coaches, and guides. This book should in particular be part of the select handful of books that life coaches, success gurus, and other facilitators for adult personal growth reference and recommend on a regular basis. The great value of this book is its combined accessibility and compact, useful presentation of each early archetypal stage. Many current works present various archetypal modes as being more-or-less

3 on a par with each other. Pearson's diagrams of growth from Innocent through Orphan to Wanderer, then through Warrior and Martyr, up to the culminating Magician, show an intuitively logical yet practical pattern. Her discussion of the "Magician" is perhaps one of the best in the field, and because it is placed as a culminating state towards which these other archetypal modes evolve, it has a special resonance. Later works, positing the "Magician" amidst other archetypes (e.g., "Empress/Queen" or "Hedonist/Love-Goddess/Courtesan"), give the "Magician" role its due - but miss the significance of reaching the "Magician" state in a person's overall evolution. Pearson's identification of the strengths and values of the "Martyr" role help many - particularly women, who are often "Martyrs" when sacrificing for their families while the children are young - to see the significance of this stage, and to cherish the time spent in the "Martyr" mode. This stage is not unique to women; many men who work diligently at their jobs and then give abundantly to their children, church, and community also share this "Martyr" archetype. Through Pearson's attention, we see the nobility of self-sacrifice - and yet are encouraged to go beyond this. The way in which Pearson addresses the "Warrior" archetype is especially important. She notes the value of this stage for all persons - women as well as men. Nevertheless, she also notes (correctly) that many men become so identified with their "Warrior" archetype that they become trapped in this stage, and never move beyond. Instead, they regard the "Warrior" as a culminating stage. It is easy to understand why some people - especially men - can become "hooked" on this stage. The clarity of ego-definition, the feeling of inclusion within an elite group (the "brotherhood of war"), the adrenaline rush, and even the rewards themselves - all of these contribute to a mistaken assumption that the "Warrior" is a desirable end-state rather than a transition mode. This is evident in books such as Moore and Gillette's "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover." Further, the "Warrior" mode (and the means by which a young man becomes a successful warrior) is the essential story of many of our heroic myths. (Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" certainly comes to mind.) Pearson beautifully illustrates her points with characters and vignettes drawn from literature. This gives the reader a much richer and more vibrant context for understanding various archetypes, dynamics, and progressions/evolutions. While the vignettes that she presents are complete enough for the reader to fully encompass a character's relevance, someone who has read the novel or play in its entirety will gain a much deeper appreciation. Those who keep her points in mind and read a book (e.g., "The Color Purple") for the first time will appreciate the book's message in a much deeper and more multi-faceted manner. In sum, this book is well-thought-out, well-written, and is easy enough to read - given the complexity and substance of its subject matter. It presents a valuable and useful framework for understanding a person's emergence into his or her adult life-journey. While Pearson has written many other works since this was originally published in 1986, it is still fresh, vibrant, and holds its own essential place in the realm of many works on archetypes today. I highly recommend this not only to individuals engaged in their life-journey, but also to their coaches, mentors, and guides - as a valuable road map which they can share with those whom they are coaching. Read more I had to read this book for a class, otherwise I likely would never had chosen it. I was extremely pleased with its content, and found that I had experienced all of the archetypal stages in my life in some form or another. My fellow classmates were equally pleased. As a matter of fact, one student in particular went so far as to tatoo the Chinese symbol for the Warrior on his bicep. Pearson offers the best example of how to apply the hero myth in our lives. Like all Modern theorist she gives excellent examples of the structure and fuction of the hero myth and how to apply it to improve relationships in your life. Most people will find themselves a better person having read this book. This website provides an overview of Dr. Carol S. Pearson s system of archetypal tools, concepts, and strategiesâ a system that builds on the work of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and others. Dr. Pearson s instruments, books, and servicesâ and those of her associatesâ help users to discover the stories theyâ re most moved to live out, and to employ

4 that understanding to align what s truly meaningful and motivating to them with how they show up in the larger world. In this way, they can gain the archetypal advantage characteristic of the world s most inspiring people, brands, and companies. Works like Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces have introduced readers to the significance of myth and archetype in our lives. Carol Pearson's bestselling The Hero Within takes us further by combining literature, anthropology, and psychology to clearly define, with insight and understanding, the six heroic archetypes that exist in all of us: the Innocent, the Orphan, the Wanderer, the Warrior, the Martyr, and the Magician. This substantially revised edition features new chapters that illuminate these archetypes, showing how to reach our fullest potential by achieving a balance between work, family, and the self. This book spends 80% of the time explaining 6 heroic archetypes that we all live by and the journey we must all take to complete the cycle. The last 20% of the book has a quiz to identify the archetypes roles in your current life and lists exercises on how to maximize your potential through each role. The two issues I have with this book are that it's descriptions of the archetypes seem to ramble on and on;i've said it before, why say in more INNOCENT, ORPHAN, MARTYR, WANDERER, WARRIOR, MAGICIAN. Interesting exploration of the archetypes we embody as we move through different times in our lives. Goes into detail about when one either owns or disowns these archetypes and the function/dysfunction that causes. I did find it particularly illuminating for myself and the people in my life, though the author makes it very clear that someone on the outside can never judge another's archetype or where they're at. Didn't mean I didn't try. Very useful concepts for categorizing life stages that are accompanied by universal perceptions and challenges. Another reviewer was right in saying that this book was longer and more feminist than necessary. That said, her many stories definitely illustrate the concepts, although I would have like cleaner synopses as well. I found this book to be pretty profound - not just blow your mind - novel thinking type of profound, but "Holy crap this is deep stuff, and it seems like it could really be true be really true. It isn't empty intellectual exercise. It is based on Jung's archetypes, and I love Jung, but Pearson puts his ideas into everyday language and makes them more accessible. It isn't empty intellectual exercise. It is based on Jung's archetypes, and I love Jung, but Pearson puts his ideas into everyday language and makes them more accessible. The archetypes are like a catalogue of possible personalities one can have. It is a way of conceiving of the world. It is like a road map. You can go back and look through your life and recognize what archetypes were dominant in certain periods. You can check your growth, and see which ones you need to work on. The theory also shines a light on personalities you might have difficulty with, and suggests that you could learn from these people that are so different from you. (less) The Hero Within is a fascinating book. The orphan and warrior were my two that I really looked too as a actor. They use myths and legends to get the point across. Excellent for your self esteem. This uplifting book tackles issues of your childhood and how you were raised. Find your inner hero and read this book! An enlightening read for personal growth. The Hero Within goes over six hero archetypes that we all live/have lived by, the innocent, orphan, martyr, wanderer, warrior, and magician, and how the progression happens between them, and the (potentialy) 'good and the bad', among other things. I found myself to be primarily magician with a mix of wanderer and martyr with a little warrior and hints of orphan. It was an interesting read about how we as humans develop. We go through archetypes and we

5 don't even know it! Some bits of advice/info were a bit out there for me, but for the most part it was an enlightening read on archetypes and life. Learning more about archetypes, really helps you understand more about life. Oh, and I took the quiz at the end and it looks like I'm a Warrior/Magician hybrid. Excellent resource, with unique and useful ideas about crafting various characters and relationships. This is a "tool box" must have in my opinion for writers, yet sort of an unknown book. I bought it from a used book store and it surprised me. Even though the book is written in the early 90's, I think the most of the content is timeless. I am reading this book again after several years. This book describes 6 archetypes we all journey through on our life path towards becoming a hero. The book uses typically western archetypes, but is very sensitive to all cultures and people in all aspects of their personal journey. The book reccomends tools/exercises for coping with each step of the way and is thoughtful. It is written by a PhD in phsychology. "The heroic quest is about saying 'yes' to yourself and in so doing, becoming more fully alive and more effective in the world.... The quest is replete with dangers and pitfalls, but it offers great rewards: the capacity to be successful in the world, knowledge of the mysteries of the human soul, and the opportunity to find and express your unique gifts in the world." In this bold and original work, Carol S. Pearson shows that the heroic quest isn't just for certain people under special circumstances. Exploring the many heroic paths available to each of us, at every point in our lives, her innovative program enables us to live heroically by activating and applying twelve archetypes in our lives. Writing for individuals seeking to realize their full potential and professionals engaged in empowering others, Pearson shows how journeys differ by the age, gender, and cultural background of the seeker, and how archetypes help awaken the capacities of our psyches. A unique diagnostic test, the Heroic Myth Index, and exercise are included to help us understand and awaken our inner guides.
