1 Scientific Method Practice 7 th Grade Life Science Name: Period: Date: / / Independent vs. Dependent variables Independent variable is what you change in the experiment. Dependent variables are the data you measure. Line Graph vs. Bar Graph You use a line graph when the data (dependent variable) is continuous (or a number) You use a bar graph when the data is not continuous (or words) The relationship between the color of a vegetable (green, yellow, and orange) and how good it tastes. Independent variable Dependent Variable Line graph or bar graph The relationship between time and the growth of plants. The relationship between fruit (apple, orange, and banana) and how often you go to the bathroom. The relationship between eye color (blue or brown) and the ability to sing. The relationship between the make of the jewelry (gold, silver, and platinum) and the cost. The relationship between the size of a garden and the weight of the vegetables.

2 Your 5 th grade teacher believes the food you eat will affect your test average. They believe if you: Eat food from MacDonald s your grades will go up 5 points Eat at Lucio s Pizza your grades will stay the same Eat at Subway your grades will go down 10 points Your social studies teacher believes the height of a person determines how much food they eat. She measured how many ounces of food people ate who were 4 feet tall, 5 feet tall, and six feet tall. Your English teacher believes the color of your hair determines how fast you can run. She gathered 3 blondes, 3 brunettes, and 3 women with red hair and forced them to race each other. Your softball/baseball coach wanted to know why some bats can hit a ball further than others. He believes the weight of the bat determines how far you can hit a ball. He had his best player take 3 swings with a 2kg bat, 3 swings with a 3kg bat, and 3 swings with a 4kg bat. 3 Use the information from your data table to create an appropriate graph. Plot the average distance. Be sure to include all necessary components of a graph. Did you provide a title? Did you give each graph a label and units?

4 Write a persuasive letter to the coach explaining what type of bat you would recommend. Breakdown of what to write: 1. State the hypothesis with the independent and dependent variable. (We investigated the relationship between the and the ) 2. Describe the experimental design. Describe the different groups and what was kept the same between them. 3. Analysis a. State which group had the highest number. b. State which group had the lowest number. c. Describe the relationship between the two groups. Did an increase in one lead to an increase in the other? Or did an increase in one lead to a decrease in the other. d. Does the data support/reject the coach s hypothesis. e. Describe your recommendation and mention the data of the group with the number to support this.
