General? QUESTIONS WE ASKED Are there any areas of your life that you d like to improve? How often do you set goals? Specific One of the current areas of your life that you would like to improve? A time you set a goal and achieved it What are the factors that motivated you to set goals at the time? How did you feel when achieved it A time you set a goal and didn t achieve it
Deeper Tell me a story about a time you worked through an emotional problem of your own A time you helped someone else through an emotional problem

Ruo Extreme user Software engineer at Uber Friend Frequently utilizes technology and extreme methods In person interview on campus
Erem Average user Software Engineer/Manager Friend Some years set goals every month; Some years set no goal; Achieved some goals left feeling confused In-person interview at his company in downtown Palo Alto
Frank Average user Retired from Global Sales Friend Capable of planning and achieving some goals, but doesn't set many goals or pursue them intensively Interviewed on Facetime

2. Interview Results & Analysis
Empathy Map
Positive pressure Do things on a regularly scheduled basis No time Practice together Have a friend with SAY me I didn t want Start with minimum my parents to Schedule Social to avoid getting worry about me recognitio conflicts burned out n
Eats out Uses fitbit Salad for lunch Makes list Uses apple watch DO Uses social media to announce goals Uses fitness apps to count calories burned Eats healthy food
Scheduling is important Support groups are crucial No genuine connections on current social media Think Self-improvement is important Behavior sequence prompting is essential Health issues are urgent
More accountability when with others Pride and accomplishment after reaching goals Social Feel Unsatisfied Excited to show people their goals Confused
Quote Insight "when a couple can think alike, it helps a lot. and we both really have similar backgrounds"--f rank having someone with a similar mindset or background is helpful for working towards a goal Need a way to connect with like-minded people
Quote Insight because of the time crunch and other priorities, we haven t been cooking at home as much as we would like -Thameenah Time/scheduling is a key pain point in achieving goals Need A better way to manage time/scheduling with specific goals in mind
Quote nobody knows if i am exercising or not, so i just sat on the couch and watched tv -Ruo Insight People are more motivated to work towards goals when they re being held accountable by others Need A way to maintain motivation and accountability when working towards a goal
Quote "I felt confused. It has been a goal for a long time. I thought if I am fluent in 3 languages, life is good; But life didn t change. life is the same; so what do I do now? --Erem Insight goals achieved alone sometimes don't feel satisfying Need A way to magnify the rewarding feeling after you achieve a goal--group projects that are designed for people to achieve goals together
Tensions & Contradictions No genuine social connections on many social media platforms Diet and fitness is not only for Appearances, but more for Health concerns Meditation and mindfulness is important, but couldn t help in some situations; needed external support Outwardly perceived as happy but internally struggling/feeling alone Internally social but can appear as antisocial because of profession/environment
Surprises Even the people that are really good at scheduling/planning, have time constraints that keep them from achieving goals While some felt happy once achieving a goal, others felt confused Importance of a set routine in achieving goals Sometimes just talking to a nice person is better than speaking with an expert Find more comfort from support and not solutions Don t want to share personal struggles with the people closest to him (such as parents) because felt they would worry about him
Insights: People are more motivated to work towards goal when feel they re being held accountable by other people and not just themselves Time/scheduling is a key pain point in achieving goals People feel supported when connecting with like-minded people Breaking down behaviors can help with achieving goals Support can be better than solutions Fitness and diet is a common theme people associate with goals Achieving goals as a group project enhances the rewarding feeling
Summarized Needs: A personalized way to achieve a goal The opportunity to connect with like-minded people A way to better manage time/schedules with a specific goal in mind A way to maintain motivation and accountability when working towards a goal
Thank You! Any Questions?
3. Compiled Empathy Map
SAY Planning process is difficult No time It s boring to not have goals Does things on a regularly scheduled basis Schedule conflicts I did financial planning to my wife Improve mindfulness Best way to help is just listen Consulting expert Start with minimum to avoid getting burned out Have a friend with me We took photos of healthy meals like yogurt and almonds to share with the group I work over 100 hours a week I didn t want my parents to worry about me I had acid reflux and cannot sleep well at night My doctor said i was too young to have high blood sugar issues Practice together People can google solutions, sharing feeling is the best The best way is help is just listen Positive pressure
DO Uses fitbit Uses apple watch Uses fitness apps to count calories burned Uses dieting apps to count calorie intakes Makes list Eats out Uses social media to announce goals Eats healthy food Salad for lunch
Think Health issues are urgent Scheduling is important Support groups are crucial No genuine connections on current social media Behavior sequence prompting is essential Essential to be mindful in advance to maintain friendships and health despite busy schedule Self-improvement is important Setting realistic goals can motivate you
Feel More accountability when with others Pride and accomplishment after reaching goals Confused Social Out of place Unsatisfied Excited to show people their goals Positive pressure from social group
