Continuing Medical Education Commercial Disclosure Boston University School of Medicine asks all individuals involved in the development and presentation of Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities to disclose all relationships with commercial interests. This information is disclosed to CME activity participants. Boston University School of Medicine has procedures to resolve apparent conflicts of interest. In addition, presenters are asked to disclose when any discussion of unapproved use of pharmaceuticals and devices is being discussed. We, Isabelle Daigneault, Jacinthe Dion, Martine Hébert, and Delphine Collin-Vézina, have no commercial relationships to disclose.
IntroducCon TraumaCc exposure = 25% before 16 years (Silverman, 2008) Prevalence of sexual abuse In Québec ( ), 3281 invescgated reports of SA in children (11% of total reports). Prevalence CSA : 22.1% women, and 9.7% men (Hébert, Tourigny, Cyr, McDuff et Joly, 2009) 25 to 50% of First NaCons people (Collin Vézina, Dion & Trocme, 2009)
Resilience Factors Self Esteem (Cicche`, Rogosch, Lynch, & Holt, 1993) Mindfulness and self acceptance may be more potent predictors of psychological health than self esteem (Carson & Langer, 2006; Kernis & Heppner, 2008; Neff, 2009; Thompson & Waltz, 2008).
Goals of the Study Assess the relacve contribucon of Self esteem and Self acceptance/mindfulness on Resilience in the normal populacon and with sexually abused youths
ParCcipants 771 French speaking youths from 3 Québec province high schools (grades 4 and 5) Socio economic indices are either low (1) or very high (9) Sample characteris.cs Gender (girls) 56.2 % Born in Canada 91.7 % First NaCons 10.3 % CSA 12.6 %
Procedures Two different studies Sexual abuse prevencon Resilience factors among First nacons Both administracon in groups of youths who completed the quesconnaires individually
Measures Variables Items Scale Examples CSA 1 Yes/No Had sex, or sexual contact, when you didn t want to Resilience CYRM 28 (Ungar, 2005) Self esteem (Rosenberg, 1965) Self acceptance/ Mindfulness CAMM (Greco, Smith, Baer, 2009) 28 5 points Not at all / A lot 4 subscales 10 4 points Strongly agree / Strongly disagree 10 5 points Never true / Always true My parent(s)/caregiver(s) know a lot about me, I am aware of my own strengths I feel that I have a number of good qualices I think that some of my feelings are bad and that I shouldn t have them, At school, I walk from class to class without noccing what I m doing
Resilience is In the context of exposure to significant adversity, resilience is both the capacity of individuals to navigate their way to the psychological, social, cultural, and physical resources that sustain their well being, and their capacity individually and colleccvely to nego)ate for these resources to be provided and experienced in culturally meaningful ways.
