Number, Title and nt all / Class Times FSC239Y5 Y Introduction to Forensic Science Forensic science is the application of any scientific inquiry into criminal investigation. The results of such inquiry are ultimately for presentation in courts of law. Specialists in forensic science will lecture on a variety of topics that will include crime scene investigation, the role of the coroner, forensic pathology, forensic chemistry, forensic botany, forensic entomology, forensic anthropology, forensic dentistry, psychology and toxicology. 2 Number, Title and nt FSC271H5 S Ethics and Professionalism in Forensic Science This course covers three main areas of importance to the forensic scientist and the expert witness: Ethics in forensic science; the scientific theories of proof and evidence including the critical thinking and logic; analysis of how the major philosophical schools of thought impact on forensic science. [24L, 12T] 50 1 TA (Marker) 35 hrs. (UTM Winter Term fields (completed/in progress) with substantial science course background at the graduate level and a background in Forensic Science; knowledge of techniques used in forensic scientific research and project management. Candidates with previous research, forensic science background, teaching, marking and field experience and are preferred. Typical duties include but are not limited to: Review, grade and mark assignments. FSC300H5 F Forensic Identification (SCI) Focusing on the scene of the crime and evidence found there, this course is an introduction to the field of forensic identification. Topics include: crime scene protocols, management and reconstruction; image collection, storage and enhancement; recognition collection; and chain of custody and preservation of evidence. 3 Number, Title and nt FSC302H5 S Advanced Forensic Identification Continuing from FSC300H5 which critically examines identification processes, which are compared and contrasted to systematics; impression evidence and physical match theory and practice; biometrics; presentation of evidence; the expert witness; requirements of society and the court. (UTM Winter Term 1:00-3:00 pm 9:00-11:00 am 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm fields (in progress or completed) is preferred with forensic identification training/experience --will consider a 4-year BSc degree in Forensic Science with forensic identification training/experience; demonstrated excellence in course subject matter; knowledge of Canadian Policing Services & Canadian Forensic Identification procedures and techniques and/or prior experience is an asset as is WHIMS graduate students registered with SGS, who have in - laboratory demonstrations -Assisting/conducting practicals -preparing/setting-up lab materials -preparing/staging of FSC crime scene house -consult with students and supervisor -invigilating tests/exams -marking of course tests/assignments. FSC311H5 S Forensic Chemistry Introduction to the basic theory and practice underlying important techniques in analytical chemistry, chosen from three major areas of instrumental analysis: spectroscopy, electrochemistry and separation science. Specific topics will include fluorescence spectroscopy, atomic spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, voltammetry, high resolution gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and a brief intro to computer applications, including Fourier transform methods. A problem-based approach will be used to explore these methods in a wide variety of practical applications. [24L, 12T] Exclusion: CHM314Y1, 317H hrs LECTURES: 6:00-9:00 pm PRACTICALs: PRA0101 & 0102 TUESDAYS A Masters degree in Forensic Science/Chemistry (or in progress for U of T students) together with appropriate Forensic Chemistry course background for the course to be demonstrated. Professional designation and/or professional experience in Forensic Chemistry is required. Knowledge of analytical chemistry/forensic chemistry, previous experience with FTIR, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, ICP-MS, SEM, and general analytical laboratory instrumentation. 4 Number, Title and FSC315H5 Forensic Biology (SCI) This course focuses on the analysis and interpretation of biological evidence in a forensic context. Students will gain knowledge in the theory and operation of forensically relevant biological and instrumental techniques used for the analysis of evidentiary items, including DNA, bodily fluids, hair, etc. Students will also develop skills relating to the interpretation, limitation, and implications of analytical results in a forensic context. [36L, 36P] nt hrs September 2014 December 2014 Professor: TBA WEDNESDAYS PRA0101 MONDAY A Master s degree in Biology or related forensic sub discipline field (in progress or completed), with an undergraduate Forensic Biology degree or substantial background in Forensic Biology preferred; professional designation and/or professional experience is an asset; demonstrated excellence in course subject matter; prior experience working in a forensic science lab setting is an asset as is WHIMS Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following: Experience/ background in: - Laboratory Analysis of Forensic Biological Evidence and crime scene investigation; Forensic Serology & Basic Serology techniques, General experience in molecular biology methods & Forensic DNA profiling: - DNA extraction methods; DNA quantitation methods; PCR; SNP genotyping (Real Time PCR and Luminex); STR genotyping using capillary sequencer, primer design -demonstrating in laboratory -preparing/setting up lab materials -consult with students and Instructor -Optimization of: DNA extraction; DNA quantitation; PCR for SNPs; SNP genotyping; PCR for STRs and STR genotyping; DNA Electrophoresis Prerequisite: BIO215H5 course instructor. Preference is given to qualified graduate students registered with SGS, who have in addition, obtained their B.Sc. in Forensic Science at UTM and who work in research labs within the related FSC481Y5 Internship in Forensic Science A research paper or term paper is required. Placements are largely dependent upon availability of positions and may involve a research project or part-time work in a forensic unit or related facility. Forensic units include the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario, and a variety of local, provincial and national police and private agencies. Students will be teamed with an appropriate expert in the field of interest. Prerequisite: nt in FSC Program/permission of instructor September Professor Tracy Rogers LECTURES: MONDAYS 2:00-4:00 pm fields (completed) with substantial science course background at the graduate level and a background in Forensic Science. Research experience is required, including knowledge of UTM ethics review protocols and writing research proposals; excellent communication skills; available to students via within 24 hours (excluding weekends) for duration of TAship; must be able to attend classes; an ability to communicate information clearly; interest, enthusiasm, and experience in scientific research; rapport with undergraduates; knowledge of techniques used in scientific research and project management. Candidates with previous research, forensic science background, teaching, marking and field experience and are preferred. graduate students registered with SGS. Reviewing and grading ethics applications and research proposals submitted by students; providing feedback on proposals; conducting a mock interview; providing feedback to students regarding their presentations; helping students develop professionalism in the practice of forensic science.
