1 CO 790 PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND CHRISTIAN ETHICS FOR COUNSELORS Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Charlotte Professor: Sid Bradley Spring 2013 Feb. 8-9; Mar 8-9 ; Apr sbradley@gordonconwell.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION: The primary objective of the course is to introduce the student to the professional dimensions of counseling and psychotherapy in several pertinent areas: 1. Develop knowledge and understanding of the basics of Christian ethics and how these serve as a foundation for Christian counseling ethics 2. Develop knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities, limits, and liabilities of professional counseling. 3. Become conversant with the central legal, ethical, and professional issues, in addition to the dilemmas that confront practitioners in counseling. 4. Integrate acquired knowledge and understanding, and apply to practical situations that arise in practicum and professional experience, with a view to the specific principles of biblical Christian ethics. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Achievement of the course objectives will be measured through a variety of assignments and activities as described below. The successful completion of these activities will require each student to spend approximately 135 hours devoted to coursework, both in class and out of class. Please note the guidelines at Course assignments include: 1. Class presentation of ethical dilemma encountered in the student s actual clinical practice during a rotation. Presented in class. Assignments will be provided 3 weeks prior to the first class, because case study presentations will be made during first weekend of class meeting. 2. The paper presenting the case study due to be ed to sbradley@gordonconwell.edu two weeks following the presentation in class, by noon of that Friday 3. Self-Care plan paper- Due April 4 th, Decision making model final ethics paper - Due May 10 th, Annotated bibliography - Due May 10 th, 2013 REQUIRED READING: 15% of the final grade. To become conversant with the pertinent ethical issues in the counseling field, students are expected to read from a variety of sources to complement areas of understanding and be aware of current ethical questions and conversations. Books may be chosen from the bibliography attached to this syllabus. The student may select other scholarly and clinical sources as long as they are professional references and clearly fall into the categories and issues that are relevant to the course.. No books may be included here which were read for other classes. Students must read the required textbooks. Additional readings should be selected from the following sources: 1. The three recommended reading books 2. The brief bibliography attached to this syllabus or the more extended bibliographies found in the textbooks and the required/recommended reading books. 3. Journals and periodicals in the fields of professional, clinical, or Christian counseling as well as marriage and family therapy. 4. Literature of relevant, functional, and applicable value, provided these sources reflect obvious significance to professional, ethical, and legal issues in counseling. The student will keep account of these readings by means of an annotated bibliography that shall include the following components, using APA style format: 1. Author(s), Title of the book, chapter, or journal article, Publisher and year of publication 2. Number of pages read by source (total pages read should also be tallied on first page) 3. Brief summary of the central ideas and concept presented. Journal articles and book chapters can be summarized in a paragraph (at least 200 words), and books can be summarized in one page, typed

4 single spaced. Although the core of the grade for this assignment is based on the number of pages read, the nuance (+ /-) is based on the quality of the annotation. 4. If the resource was a videotape or seminar, indicate a page number equivalency (1 hour = 33 pages; 6 hour maximum). Grading criteria for this assignment are: 2000 pages = A 1600 pages = B 1200 pages = C <1200 pages = D Due date: May 10 th, 2013 submitted electronically by ing sbradley@gordonconwell.edu. CASE STUDY 25% of the final grade Students are assumed to be deeply immersed in the practicum training experience or to have completed all internship rotations. Each student will present a (20 min) detailed case study from personal practicum/internship experience, which represents an ethical question or challenge. If uncertain that the issue is an ethical dilemma, the student is encouraged to discuss it with the professor well in advance of the class presentation. Care should be taken to disguise all distinguishing details in order to protect fully the identity of the clients discussed. Use creativity in the presentation and include the elements below. State clearly the ethical dilemma Give history and details of its context Facilitate class discussion (using a few carefully crafted questions) Present the group s decision and rationale Due date: A written, 5 page summary of the case, in APA format, including the first two components above, references to at least 5 professional sources (journal articles or professional books; beyond references to professional codes of ethics) of your thinking about the ethical issues involved, and summary of from the class discussion and insights gained and conclusions. Due Date: Two week after your class presentation, submitted electronically by ing sbradley@gordonconwell.edu. Grading of this case study will be based on the following: Component Description of what is expected Points Nature & presentation of dilemma insight about ethic principles and guidelines; reference to professional standards; Appropriateness for class; clarity of description; identification of issues 15 History of case orderly, logical, systemic 10

5 Summary of class discussion positive & negative aspects of the class discussion; how the discussion affected the student s ethical conceptualization 10 Class Decision clearly stated what the class decided; whether the student agrees with this, or not, why 5 Conclusions clarity of conclusions, ethical, well justified 5 Literature Cited used 5 appropriate, appropriately cited, APA format 5 Total Points 50 FINAL PAPER - 40% of the final grade A research paper is required, presenting a carefully crafted framework for ethical decision-making. This synthesized approach to challenges inherent within helping should address consideration of how to utilize the Christian faith perspective along with the professional ethical commitments within the practice of counseling. The paper should demonstrate a thorough grasp of the dilemmas, challenges, premises, and principles within the context of the broadly relevant cultural issues. A substantial bibliography and extensive reflective thought are assumed in this assignment. Grading for this paper will be based on: Component Description of what is expected Points Framework Understanding of ethical theory and principles undergirding professional ethical standards and the proposed decision-making model 10 Integration Consideration of issues related to integration of counseling theory and ethics, and personal faith commitment and theology 10 Challengers Understanding potential challenges and areas of conflict, both within professional ethical standards of practice and between counseling profession and faith commitments 10 Model Clear framework for decision making model for handling ethical dilemmas in practice 10 quality of thought evidence of understanding how ethics relates to practice, and ability to apply critical thinking skills to the area of ethics in counseling practice 5

6 Literature Cited used professional ethics codes, citing particular sections, and includes additional 5 appropriate references to ethical practice, appropriately cited, APA format 5 Total 50 FORMAT: Ten to twelve (10-12) pages, plus a bibliography presented in the APA style. SELF CARE PROTOCOL 20% of the final grade In as much as ethical practice and professional standards require every therapist to attend to their own personal well-being and ensure that they do not suffer from burnout, it is essential that every therapist develop a selfcare plan. This assignment, therefore, is being assigned to permit each student the opportunity to consider, reflect on and develop a plan for self-care that will carry them forward into their career with the best possible preparation for ensuring a successful career. After reading The Resilient Clinician, and utilizing the resources therein, students will evaluate their strengths and vulnerabilities, sources of stress and renewal, and prepare a self-care plan. This paper will include discussion of the causes, prevention and resolution of burnout, and identify your own personal vulnerabilities. Grading of this case study will be based on: 1. Identification of own strengths and vulnerabilities - 4 pts 2. Identification of personal and professional stressors - 4 pts 3. Understanding causes, prevention and resolution of burnout - 6 pts 4. Thoughtfulness and completeness of self-care plan - 6 pts Due date: April 4 th, 2013 submitted electronically by ing sbradley@gordonconwell.edu. GRADING OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS Grades for each paper described above will be based primarily on the content as indicated in each assignment. However, quality of writing will be considered. In addition, points will be lost for other difficulties including failure to use APA format (between ½ and 1 letter grade, depending on severity of errors), excessive length (3 points per page over limit), and lateness (1 point per day up to 2 full letter grades). ATTENDANCE The style and format of this course is essentially that of a senior seminar that anticipates maximum class input and reflective discussion from the student. The student is expected to attend all class sessions and participate fully in the classroom experience. Case study presentations and class discussions will be a significant part of the

7 final grade. Attendance and full participation is expected during all class meetings. If you miss up to three hours of class for any reason, you can either choose to 1. Have five points deducted from your final course grade or 2. Submit an annotation for an additional 500 pages of reading pertaining to course content as well as making up any pertinent assignments related to missed content to be decided by professor. GRADING CRITERIA The final grade will reflect the combined efforts of the student as derived from the following sources: assignment: percent of final grade: due date, noon on: 1.
