Interpretation of Development Klaus Riegel Giulia Rabassi & Jenny El Boushy

Agenda Biography Theory Stages of the Theory What is Development? How can Personal Development be explained? Connections How it influences the family Pros & Cons

Brief Biography! Born in 1925 in Berlin! American Psychologist! He was a metal worker before going to university! University of Hamburg! Died in 1977

What is the Theory About?! The theory attempts to identify patterns of life and describes growth or changes in human behavior as individuals mature.! Looks at how an individual s internal and external changes can influence their development.! Riegel claims that everything is continually changing and rarely in perfect harmony.

FOUR DIMENSIONS

INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGICAL

FIRST DIMENSION Describes emotional maturity and independence, as well as the growth of ones mental processes.

INDIVIDUAL BIOLOGICAL

SECOND DIMENSION Describes physical and sexual maturity

CULTURAL SOCIOLOGICAL

THIRD DIMENSION Describes the expectations and opportunities that each society defines for individuals.

ENVIRONMENTAL

FOURTH DIMENSION Describes the physical, economic, and political environment changes in which the individual lives.

What is Development?! Development is the co-ordination/ synchronization of any two dimensions in addition to progressions in each dimension.! Therefore it occurs when two of the four stages are coordinated, and this depends on the individual.

! When synchronism is absent, the result is a crisis or a conflict.! Riegel believed that a crisis is a constructive confrontation in which contradiction is the source of new changes.! A person that leaves home when they are biologically ready but not psychologically ready will face many challenges which will lead to a crisis, but this will allow the person to mature faster than they would have.

! An individual may be biologically mature enough for marriage, but because the right partner has not yet been found, not mature at the individual-psychological level.! It is also possible that the individualpsychological and biological levels are synchronized, but society expects people to marry at a certain age.! One might also be ready in the cultural psychological aspect, but their economical status (environment) may not allow them to step into marriage.

How can Personal Development be Explained?! Theory itself is about personal development! Individuals become mature, independent and responsible! Individuals become biologically developed as they hits puberty

! Individuals get educated, finds a job, and get married at an eligible age as society expects him to! Individuals start earning money and becoming financially independent!! ready to leave home, get married, etc.

How is the Family Influenced?! Roles change as individuals develop! Family stops to support child physically, financially and socially! Less responsibilities! As children leave home, parents become middle-aged parents, according to the Family Life Cycle.! Parents retire and seek other challenges and hobbies.

Connections! Klaus Riegel s theory can be connected to:! Developmental theory because it explain how, when, why, and thanks to what factors individuals develop.! System s theory because change/development of the individuals within the groups they belong to influence and relate to one another! Roles are influenced

PROS & CONS

Pros! Recognizes that the transition to adulthood is not predictable but takes into account each individual s unique experiences! Recognizes that the environment a person lives in has an effect on an individual s development! Reflects the changing social clock of society (individuals staying at home much longer)

Cons! The Psychological dimensions (maturity of mental processes) is hard to observe and measure compared to other developmental theories! The dimensions are unpredictable therefore we are unable to anticipate role changes and prepare for them
