Predicting Patterns of Behavior Using the Enneagram CLASS 4 Debrief and Grounding Patterns we noticed as we confronted conflicts Grounding: Opening flow Exercise In Dyads 3 minutes each, then 3 minutes debrief together Explore your experience with self typingwhat inconsistences did you notice, what made you doubt a certain type, what seemed like at times didn t fit. Where were you in your journey of self understanding when you explored type. Did anything feel off? 1
Homeostasis The maintenance of a stable internal environment in spite of what may be a very different external environment A key concept in Biology- how an organism survives Ex: fever & thermoregulatory mechanisms~ so we don t sizzle our brain What do the lines mean? The Enneagram predicts patterns of behavior It indicates how a particular type will stabilize behavior and open to new and useful strategies under certain circumstances The external environment demands homeostatic changes to stabilize our behavior as well as offering us opportunities for growth 2
The Lines of Flow The Direction of Levels 1,2,3 (1 > 7 > 5 > 8 > 2 > 4 >1) and ( 9 > 3 >6 >9) The Security (shadow) Levels 4 & Below The Missing Levels 1,2,3 and the Direction during Levels 4 & Lower ( 1 > 4 >2 > 8 > 5 > 7 > 1 > 4) and (9 > 6 > 3 > 9) Homeostasis of the Psyche Shunting to Create Opportunity Stress Dominant Integration The missing piece The Security point Importance of the Levels Missing Piece Integration Direction of Adaptation under stress The Security (shadow) Point 3
Out spot, out! Older terminology is misleading. The term direction of disintegration is no longed used as it suggests an entirely negative connotation. In effect, moving in this direction can bring an individual into contact with a missing part of their behavior Other names- help or hinder? Direction of Stress/ Adaptation Old Disintegration in WOE Also called the Defensive point Sandra Maitri: the logic of the soul Direction of Integration Direction of Growth, Transformation Sandra Maitri: The Heart Point and The Soul child (the most problematic structure of our soul, the part we haven t been able to allow) We are connected to 2 points on the circle of the Enneagram 4
Shunting to Create Opportunity Stress Dominant Integration The missing piece The Security point Importance of the Levels Missing Piece Integration Direction of Adaptation under stress The Security (shadow) Point Difficulty fitting a dominant type? If an individual presents in a time of extreme stress or trauma they may be acting out the behaviors of the type they go to under stress and seem very much that type Example: Howard Hughes, a brilliant type Seven shunted over to type level 7 and became an eccentric recluse instead of a violent man dangerous to others 5
Howard Hughes goes down the Levels From the film The Aviator Direction of Stress/Adaptation It is unconscious and compulsive The ego s way of automatically compensating for imbalances in the psyche Usually manifests under stress or uncertainty This usually looks like acting out in the flavor of the type we shunted to EX: of a Two who is exhausted and feeling overwhelmed by helping and when asked to do one more thing- BOOM- throws a tizzy fit and becomes like an enraged mama type 8 bear For all the types: Whatever is repressed by a type is acted out under pressure in ways indicated by the type s Direction of Adaptation It is really just another survival mechanismit is an escape hatch or a steam vent or a pop-off valve allowing us to let off pressure from our own type issues, giving temporary relief If the stress is severe and persists we can get stuck there (like Howard Hughes) and descend into mental illness 6
Under Stress behaviors that don t fit the type Type 8 exhaust energy and shunt to the withdrawn 5 stop the outward energy Type 9 becomes worried like the Type 6 to shock themselves out of complacency Type 1 abandon their methodical rigid behavior for the moody and what feels like irrational behavior of the Type 4 Type 2 overwhelmed feeling no one is addressing their needs, they become aggressive and dominating in rebellion Type 3 As they become hypercharged, they disengage and zone out These behaviors often surprise others Type 4 As they feel more withdrawn and darkness is descending, they become suddenly needy of others Type 5 as the threat of a disintegrating withdrawn mind worsens, they shunt to the manic, scattered behavior of the Type 7 Type 6 As the dutiful sense of obligation feels like too much, they become competitive and arrogant like a Type 3 Type 7 As their thoughts scatters and run amok, they become perfectionistic and orderly like Type 1 A Type 6 becomes frenetic A woman I worked with in a medical office came under extreme stress. She began producing handouts of every type for every condition and came to the office in a flurry insisting that we all should step up to be more efficient and pass out the handouts 7
Another example to ponder In the extreme, is there a correlation with medical conditions? I have had several Type 3 patients who were driven and highly successful who crashed (usually in their 40s) and developed chronic fatigue syndrome CFS is the opposite of the energizer bunny of the Type 3 An Exercise TBA Wrap up and fieldwork Since shunts along the lines of flow are unconscious, we can only notice them after they have happened- can you see any happening in the week ahead? Next week- the Direction of Integration and opportunities for growth and transformation Thank you! 8
