2 Servant Leadership an Exploration of Empowerment in The Work Place

3 Intentional Change Intentional change must begin with a person wanting to change. How do people change in sustainable ways? The change process actually involves a sequence of discontinuities, called discoveries, which function as an interactive cycle in producing sustainable change at the individual level. Fractals and intentional change allow change to occur at any level: individual, dyad, team, group, family, organization, community, country, culture, global, and even cosmic

4 Boyatzis s Theory of Self-Directed Learning and Resonant Relationships

5 Fostering the Ideal Self A sense of one s core identity An image of desired future, dreams, passions, hope When we engage in mindfulness, hope and compassion towards others it increases our ability to reach our ideal self and to foster the same in others.

6 Emotional Intelligence and Change Research by Boyatzis and McKee shows that emotions are the cornerstone of Resonance Leadership Theory. Emotions are contagious It takes only one negative message to send someone downward, but six to eight positive messages to bring them back up.

7 Accurate Self Image For a person to truly consider changing a part of himself or herself, they must have a sense of what they value and want to keep, and admit aspects they wish to change.

8 Mindfulness Through Learning A learning agenda is needed that focuses on development and arouses a positive belief in one s capability and the hope of improvement.

9 Relationships and Metamorphosis Our relationships both mediate and moderate our sense of who we are and who we want to be. As we experiment and practice with desired change we develop our elaborate ideal self and understand our real self, gain value and strength, become something more than we were before.

11 Live Like a Cell Higher Purpose Cell- Every cell in your body agrees to work for the welfare of the whole; its individual welfare comes second. The cell will die to protect the body and often does. Servant Leader- I am here to serve. I am here to inspire. I am here to love. I am here to live my truth.

12 Communion Cell- Every cell keeps in touch with every other cell. Messenger molecules race everywhere to notify the body s farthest outposts of desired intention. Servant Leader Appreciates others. Communicates information as well as feelings and listens.

13 Awareness Cell Cells adapt from moment to moment. They are flexible. Getting caught up in rigid habits is not an option. Servant Leader Spends time observing. If angered the aware person withdraws for a moment, sits quietly and explores what is beneath the anger; then lets the anger go.

14 Being Cell- Cells obey the universal cycle of rest and activity. Rest and sleep are needed. In the silence of inactivity the future of the body is incubating. Being obsessively active or aggressive is not an option. Servant Leader- May spend time in meditation. The servant leader is able to breath and become aware of self- just experience existence.

15 Efficiency Cells Cells function with the smallest possible expenditure of energy. Typically, a cell stores only 3 seconds of food and oxygen in its cell walls. It trusts on being provided for. Excessive consumption is not an option. Servant Leader- Lets go of excessive control. This leader does not work from greed, but uses resources wisely. They trust in others.

16 Bonding Cell- Due to their common genetic heritage, cells know that they are fundamentally the same. They have a common identity, which is unchanging. Being an outcast is not an option. Servant Leader- Understands we are all human. The Servant Leader expresses compassion, care and understanding. They do not exclude; instead they foster the best in others. They promote excellence and inspire others to succeed.

17 Giving Cell- The cell s primary activity is giving, which maintains the integrity of all other cells. Total commitment to giving makes receiving automatic. Giving and receiving are two halves of a natural cycle. Hording is not an option. Servant Leader- He or she does not lead for personal gain or personal reward. The servant leader works for the good of the whole. It is in that giving that much is received.

18 Immortality Cell Cells reproduce in order to pass on their knowledge, experience and talents, withholding nothing from their offspring. This is a kind of practical immortality. Withholding is not an option. Servant Leader- Thinks in terms of legacy. They think about what they want to leave behind, be remembered for. They strive to give of themselves to achieve practical immortality.

19 The World is Within Us Actin and Myosin allow the muscles in insect wings to contract and relax. When one of these paired molecules is absent, wings will grow but they cannot flap and are therefore useless. The same two proteins are responsible for the beating of the human heart, and when one is absent, the person s heart beat is inefficient.

20 Servant Leader With these chemicals the heart sometimes has the impulse to fly. The heart can be free of boundaries, all aflutter, full of possibilities, feel one with the world and with each other.

21 Concluding Thought People change in desired ways, but not without intentional efforts. With intentional efforts teams, organizations, communities, and even countries can change in desired and sustainable ways. We as servant leaders must guide this change.
