Projects in preparation Pride shame as causal agents in constructing aggressive identities and in shaping violent inter-group relations. (The case of the Mountain Area of Mylopotamon, Rethymnon, Crete). A research programme in preparation. Principal investigators: A.E. Astrinakis, Despina Stamatopoulou (Assist. Prof. of Psychology), and Telemachos Iatridis (Lecturer in Social Psychology). Following recent synthetic formulations on the productive relations between emotions and violence (such as the symbolic interactionist psychodynamic approach to emotions advanced by Sheff, and the symbolic interactionist social learning approach advanced by Matsueda), this interdisciplinary field research project aims to explore the profound impact/ effect of certain emotions in constructing assertive or aggressive types of personal and social identities in the mountain communities (villages) of Mylopotamon, Rethymnon, Crete. In that area, a certain form of 4
5 Differential Social Organization is prevailing, expressed in high rates of individual-, interpersonal-, and collective-level deviance, delinquency, and criminality and in violent intergroup conflicts. Specifically, we hypothesize that (1) due to cultural reasons, pride and shame are master social emotions constitutive of the social bonds in the aforementioned social contexts, and, thus, (2) underlie the construction of the social self via the operation of role-taking/ role-making, social comparison, selfmonitoring and reflected appraisals processes. Therefore, (3) pride and shame are causal agents in forming and developing the mountain village common (and communal) bond type groups, as well as the inter-group (status) relations and conflicts that ensue among them. Key participant of the proposed work project: Realizing the research potential of a primary health care educational and research entity by integrating multidisciplinary expertise and developing the infrastructure. (FP7 REGPOT : Unlocking and developing the Research Potential of research entities established in the EU s Convergence Regions and Outermost Regions). Project Coordinator: Christos Lionis, Assoc. Prof. of Social & Family Medicine, Director of the Dept. of Social Medicine and the Clinic of Social & Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete. 5
