3 Materials You Will Need 7 Unit V: Precipitating Factors, Rational Detachment, Integrated Experience Today s Presenter: Pam Sikorski CPI Professional Staff Instructor 8 Primary Objective To help staff understand that we CANNOT always stop the behavior, but we CAN influence the outcome. 9 3
4 Meeting the Primary Objective Use of questions and examples to stimulate thinking about life experiences. Creating a culture of mutual respect. Linking the three concepts in this unit. Accomplishing the unit s Instructional Objectives. 10 Instructional Objectives Through Unit V, participants will: Identify underlying factors that precipitate escalating behavior. Maintain professional attitudes during a crisis intervention by rationally detaching. Understand the reciprocal relationship between the behavior of staff and the behavior of those in their charge, especially during crisis intervention. Provide the best possible Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security SM for all individuals in our care. 11 Facilitation Dynamics Unit should take minutes to cover. Within your lecture, use visual aids or analogies to enhance understanding of concepts. Importance of clear directions and group control to protect everyone s Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security SM. Opportunity to review the CPI Crisis Development Model SM (repetition builds retention!). 12 4
5 Content Presentation Veronica s Story Role-Play of a sample start to Unit V (Pam is the Instructor; Sue is a participant) 13 Poll Question 1 Check statements that are true about any of the concepts taught within Unit V: Staff never have any control over Precipitating Factors. Precipitating Factors vary across populations or settings. Rational Detachment you either have this ability or you don t. The three terms in this unit are unrelated concepts. Unit V is not when the Integrated Experience is introduced. 14 Unit Discussion Precipitating Factors The internal and external causes of acting-out behavior over which staff have little or no control. Staff don t want to become one for those in our care. For some, we can be proactive and lessen their impact. NOT excuses for challenging behavior. Staff can have these as well, which influences our ability to rationally detach. 15 5
6 Unit Discussion Rational Detachment Our ability as staff to stay in control of our own behavior and not take acting-out behavior personally. Without it, we re likely to overreact or act inappropriately. Classify strategies for doing it into three categories. Finding positive outlets for negative energy is critical to preventing burnout. 16 Unit Discussion Integrated Experience Staff attitudes and behavior affect individuals in our care and vice versa. People don t act out in a vacuum. For every action, there s an equal and opposite reaction. This term was first introduced in Unit I. Now is a chance to cover it in depth and show its relationship to the CPI Crisis Development Model SM. 17 Transitions Links or connectors that cement pieces of the course or a unit together. From Unit IV into Unit V: As empathic listeners, we take the opportunity to gain insight into what s really behind the behavior we are seeing we call these causes Precipitating Factors... OR Here in Unit IV, we ve looked at many possible staff interventions. Even if your staff do all those things, why can t we stop 100% of crises from ever happening? Unit V looks at this issue of causation of behavior
7 Poll Question 2 Check the BEST example of a transition into Unit VI on Staff Fear and Anxiety: We re done with Unit V. Now for Unit VI. Any fear makes it impossible for staff to rationally detach. Let s make two lines for an exercise I d like to lead. Staff fear and anxiety also affect the Integrated Experience. 19 Transitions Within Unit V: Staff managing and coping with their own Precipitating Factors are going to be more capable of rationally detaching and therefore having a positive impact on those around them... OR The visual aid from Keypoint Refresher Workbook From Unit V into Unit VI: It can be difficult to respond in a caring and professional way when we are frightened.
