DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Activity 1 Introduction 35 minutes P u r p o s e Participants are enrolled and engaged with an introductory activity that creates an active, rather than passive, (but comfortable) learning environment. Desired outcomes of the session are presented. 1. Introduce Program large group 2 min. Display visual aid 1 Welcome! Welcome participants to DISCovering Self and Others. Introduce yourself. R e f e r e n c e Display the DISC Model poster, but keep it covered until instructed to reveal it. Building the Model is a discovery activity. DISCovering 2. Conduct Introductory Activity Three Words That Describe You large group 8 min. Ask participants to write their names on their name tents. Refer to participant workbook page 1 Three Words That Describe You. Control-Oriented Extrovert-Tendency D Direct Risk Taking Change Oriented Outcome Oriented People Oriented Asks What? Asks Who? Fight Judge THE DISC MODEL Be Pessimistic KINESTHETIC FEELING I Flight Perceive Be Optimistic Process Oriented Service Oriented Asks Why? Asks How? C VISUAL AUDITORY S Continuation Oriented Risk Assessing Indirect Introvert-Tendency Accept-Oriented Ask participants to write three words to describe themselves in the primary role they play. Provide your own examples, e.g., passionate, productive, and curious. Allow a minute or so. Ask participants to briefly introduce themselves (name, role, work location, etc.) and share the three words that describe them. ACTIVITIES 1
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 After the introductions are complete, ask participants to write another word or phrase beside each of their three words that might describe the way someone else could misinterpret their behavior. Provide your own examples, e.g., Passionate could be seen as dogmatic or close-minded Productive could be perceived as demanding or too ambitious Curious could be misinterpreted as busybody or controlling Have participants share their second list with others at their table or in small groups of three or four. Say... DISCovering Self and Others is about understanding your own behavior and the way that behavior could be interpreted or (mis) understood by others; it is also about understanding others behavior and the intentions behind it. 2 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF 3. Discuss the Question: Why Is DISCovering Self and Others So Important? large group 10 min. Display visual aid 2 Why is DISCovering Self and Others so important? Refer to participant workbook page 2 Why Is DISCovering Self and Others So Important? Make these remarks I d like you to consider why DISCovering Self and Others is so important. Before you answer this question out loud, let s explore what we mean by DISCovering Self and Others. Ask This learning experience is about understanding our own behavior and understanding the behavior of others. This is not an easy thing to do. Why is it so difficult to get a grasp on human behavior? ACTIVITIES 3
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 R e f e r e n c e Visual aid 3 is a five-part build. Solicit responses such as Behavior is situational. Everybody is different. Our own prejudices shape the way we see things and others. Behavior is often the result of many factors within the individual. Acknowledge the responses and reinforce this point The study of human behavior is not an exact or easy science. But the model we re about to show you will help you begin to make sense of what we know so that you can better understand yourself and others. Display visual aid 3 Why We Behave as We Do. Refer to participant workbook page 3 Why We Behave as We Do. Make this point All behavior begins with (1) an event, stimulus, or incident (that could be seen by the individual as either a dilemma or an opportunity) which (2) triggers a response based on personality, which leads to (3) our behavior. 4 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Refer to participant workbook page 4 Why We Behave as We Do Personality-Based Response. Display visual aid 4 Why We Behave as We Do Personality- Based Response. Ask participants to complete the diagram in their workbooks as you describe it. Make these points The second step in this diagram our response is determined by personality. There are four dimensions to our personality that shape our response that leads to a particular behavior. Display visual aid 5 Why We Behave as We Do Personality- Based Response. ACTIVITIES 5
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 Make these remarks The four dimensions of personality are, from the inside out, the Core, DISCposition, Valuing Points of View, and a historical concept of self called the Persona. Each of these aspects of ourselves ultimately contributes to our behavior. Display visual aid 6 Why We Behave as We Do Core. Make this remark At the core of our behavior is an unconscious place sometimes referred to as the great unknown or spirit. Whatever it is called, the extent that this core becomes known, the more authentic our behavior is. This aspect of personality is one we should consider, but isn t as easily understood or studied as the other three. Display visual aid 7 Why We Behave as We Do DISCposition. 6 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Describe DISCposition DISCposition is the most researched and understandable aspect of personality. Define DISCposition DISCposition is behavior that is somatic (at the cellular level) and physiological. It is instinctive behavior. Provide this example First there is the event, stimulus, or incident. For example, suppose the stimulus is that I decide to conduct the next part of this activity standing in this space. (Position yourself inside a participant s personal space.) As the person whose space I am invading, you have a perception that this is either a dilemma or an opportunity. Let s call this a dilemma you are very uncomfortable with my invasion. (Speak directly to the participant, then to the entire group.) Now get in touch with your instinctive feeling when I invade your space. You may feel angry or threatened or violated. But those are interpretations of how your body is reacting. I d like you to become aware of and notice the actual physiological responses. What happens to your body? Your adrenal glands kick into gear, you may feel a more rapid heart rate, your palms sweat, etc. ACTIVITIES 7
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 Those physiological feelings will most likely result in one of two responses. You will either want to push me away (this is called the fight response) or you will want to move away from me (this is called the flight response). Neither of these initial responses is cognitive or from conscious choice they are the way your body responds to the simulus. Neither of these responses in and of themselves is good or bad. However, given a particular situation, one response may be more appropriate or effective. Make this point This program focuses on understanding this aspect of self the disposition, or what we call DISCposition. Your disposition results in a pattern of behavior, so you can observe it, understand it, and ultimately, if you so choose, you can direct it, overcome it, change it, or vary it. Display visual aid 8 Why We Behave as We Do Valuing Points of View. Describe Valuing Points of View Valuing Points of View, on the other hand, are usually cognitive, conscious, and thoughtful. Our values, derived from beliefs we hold, come through a rational weighing of consequences and help us determine what is good or bad, right or wrong. They are premeditated. 8 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Provide this example Perhaps in this case of me invading your space, even though your body is telling you to fight (to push me away) or to flight (to roll your chair back), you do nothing because as you think about it, you realize I m only trying to make a point and I m not really going to stand here all day. Based on your belief, and maybe even a value you ve formed about patience and giving people the benefit of the doubt, you do not act. Make this point One of our greatest challenges as human beings is to clarify whether our behavior our responses to the demands of the circumstances is driven by DISCposition or driven by values. Display visual aid 9 Why We Behave as We Do Persona. ACTIVITIES 9
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 Describe Persona The fourth aspect of self that contributes to our behavior is called Persona, or the person seen by the outside world. The persona is a mask or facade stemming from three factors: a. The self we think we are, based on the realities of DISCposition and valuing points of view b. The self we want to be our ideal self c. The self we think others expect us to be The persona is like a cloak or mask between the real self and the outside world that can be either a source of great delusion or the basis for true change and/or influence. Display visual aid 10 Why We Behave as We Do. Describe this course As you can probably discern, your core Valuing Points of View and Persona are critical elements to understanding your behavior, but this course will focus on DISCovering Self and Others on your DISCposition. 10 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Display visual aid 11 Why is DISCovering Self and Others so important? Refer again to participant workbook page 2 Why Is DISCovering Self and Others So Important? Ask this question This leads me back to the original question I asked you to consider, Why is DISCovering Self and Others so important? Give these instructions Based on our conversation, please jot down your thoughts on the answer to this question in your participant workbook page 2. Allow one minute. ACTIVITIES 11
PART ONE DISCovering SELF DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 Solicit responses such as Until you are aware of your DISCposition, or patterns of behavior, it will be difficult to appreciate, formulate, or adopt developed values and a healthy persona. If you don t understand that you have these instinctive responses, then when situations call for a more appropriate response, you won t be aware of the need to change, let alone have an idea of how to change your behavior. As a leader and developer of others, it could be helpful to understand the typical instinctive responses of others so you can better handle the situation or provide guidance. Share a personal story that illustrates why DISCovering Self and Others is so important to you on a personal level. Use the following example as a template for your personal story In our first exercise today, I said one of the words that describes me is passionate. At meetings with my peers I would demonstrate my passion through my extroverted and direct behavior. One day someone told me that my passion often shut others down. I was shocked. My intention was to be collaborative and creative not dogmatic and overbearing. I didn t understand what was happening until I began to understand my DISCposition. Then I realized that my instinctive behavior was getting in the way of my intentions and values. I m still extroverted and direct; I still have a basic need to control my environment. But with the help of this material, I m now beginning to notice how my instinctive behavior comes across and direct it more appropriately. Sometimes I even attempt to change my instinctive behavior. It isn t easy but it is incredibly rewarding when the payoff is a better relationship and greater productivity. 12 ACTIVITIES
DISCovering SELF AND OTHERS FACILITATOR GUIDE 2011 PART ONE DISCovering SELF Give these instructions Take just a moment to experience what I m talking about. Please fold your arms. Now switch arms. Notice your level of comfort at the first request compared to the second. Notice that some of you have already switched back to the original position! Make these points Your comfort level on the first request is a manifestation of your preference. If, time after time, when asked to fold your arms, you fold your arms in the same manner, we would say that is a pattern of behavior and a manifestation of your disposition. You don t think about it, you just do it. Imagine you were in a situation where folding your arms like that sent a message to another person that you had no intention of sending. Imagine that the message made communication and relating to this person very difficult. You would find yourself wondering, What s wrong with this person? Why can t we communicate? They re a real problem. Upon discovering the cause of the miscommunication, would you be willing to fold your arms differently or to not fold your arms at all? It turns out that some of us are naturally versatile we are able to fold and unfold our arms naturally and comfortably. Others of us find it more difficult. Some of us want to do what it takes to communicate effectively; others of us are not so inclined. These are the kinds of things we are going to ask you to contemplate in this session. Make this remark This leads us to the outcomes for this session. ACTIVITIES 13
