Agenda Session Goal Vision Definition Key Concepts Self Assessment Vision Characteristics Safety Vision Clinic Communicating/Sharing Your Vision Living Your Vision Slide 3
Session Goal To develop our ability to provide a clear picture of the future of safety, in a way that others find compelling. Slide 4
What is Vision? A vivid picture of what it looks and/or feels like to achieve your goal. For example: To land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth John F. Kennedy, 1961 A clear and powerful image that can inspire others to work towards that goal. Slide DEKRA Insight. All rights reserved.
Vision: Definition Painting a vivid and compelling Personal Safety Vision, and inspiring others to pursue it with you. Slide DEKRA Insight. All rights reserved.
Safety Leadership is Personal It begins by asking ourselves two basic questions. What does safety really mean to me? What do I want people to know about my belief in safety? Slide 7
Vision Key Concepts Live it or lose it Share your conviction that safety can and will be improved Vision is for everyone Vision Key Concepts Weave your safety vision into everyday life A Personal Safety Vision is about people, not numbers Make it personal Slide 9
Vision: How am I Doing? You will work individually. Complete the Self-Assessment to: Assess your current visionary behavior. Identify strengths and improvement areas to focus on during the session. You have 5 minutes for this activity. Slide 10
Personal Safety Vision Characteristics Compelling Innovative Stretching Observable Aligned Slide 11
Personal Safety Vision Characteristics Compelling Innovative Compelling Easy for people to identify with. Taps into emotions. Inspires a desire to achieve it. Innovative Challenges or breaks paradigms. Encourages even demands creativity to achieve it. Stretching Stretching Is firmly rooted in the future. Challenges everyone to go beyond existing performance and/or capabilities. Observable Aligned Observable Is specific. You will be able to see if you have achieved it. Aligned With the organization s overall vision and to its safety vision in particular. With team members reality and needs. Slide 12
Activity: Ideas for a Personal Safety Vision Take a couple of minutes to brainstorm potential ideas/themes for your personal safety vision. Then, draw a picture to illustrate your safety vision: For example, draw a picture (or a series of pictures) of what things will look like when you have achieved your Personal Safety Vision. Now, get together with 2-3 others, and share/discuss your ideas and pictures. You have 15 minutes for this activity. Slide 13
Personal Safety Vision Clinic: Part 1 Now, work individually to convert your picture into the first written draft of your Personal Safety Vision. Draw from: Vision Key Concepts. Your self-assessment. Characteristics of a Good Vision. Ideas generated during the last activity. You have 5 minutes for this part of the activity. Slide 14
Personal Safety Vision Clinic: Part 2 Go back and review your first draft against the Safety Vision Characteristics. Slide 15
Personal Safety Vision Clinic: Part 3 Share your first draft with one other person, and vice versa. Discuss, ask for and give feedback. Use the Characteristics of a Personal Safety Vision as part of the discussion. Slide 16
Personal Safety Vision Clinic: Part 4 We ll now each take turns sharing our Personal Safety Vision, and getting feedback with the entire workshop. We ll go round-robin, where each person will read their current version, and solicit feedback from other attendees. Next, you will use the feedback and the insights you gain from these discussions with your colleagues to re-draft your Personal Safety Vision. Slide 17
Personal Safety Vision Clinic: Part 5 Finally, use the feedback and the insights you just gained from the feedback of your colleagues, and make any desired changes to your Personal Safety Vision. Slide 18
Personal Safety Vision Implementation Model Share It Use It Live It Share It A clear and compelling Personal Safety Vision should give direction and meaning to the dayto-day efforts of you as well as your family and co-workers. This is about making sure others know about your Personal Safety Vision, taking every opportunity to make your Personal Safety Vision an integral part of your day-to-day interactions, and looking for creative ways to keep getting your vision across. Use It Knowing is not doing. Just because you have shared your Personal Safety Vision doesn t mean your actions will always align with it. This is about helping both you and others look for practical ways to move toward the vision. It is also about visibly recognizing the progress you all make toward it. Live It Day In and Day Out This is about walking the talk. Show not only through your words but also through your actions that you are totally committed to achieving your Personal Safety Vision. Slide 19
Group Activity You ll be divided into three teams. At your assigned flip-chart, brainstorm as many ideas as you can for implementing that step in the process. Slide 20 M_623 (1703) L DEKRA Insight. All rights reserved.
Insights and Actions Individually, capture any key take-aways, ideas from the previous activity, that will help you Share It; Use It; Live It. Slide 21
Top Ten Things I Learned and Liked Top Ten s 3 Best How can I use this in my job/role? 2. How can I use this in my job/role? 3. How can I use this in my job/role? One I Will Use Right Away The ONE thing I will start doing, or do differently, beginning immediately is? I will finalize and share my Personal Safety Vision statement with my employees, manager, co-workers, family. The specific actions I will take are (when and where)? I will block out time on my calendar to finalize my personal safety vision. I will schedule time with my manager to share my personal safety vision. I will conduct a job safety briefing, or staff meeting where my sole objective will be to share my personal safety vision with my employees. I will then routinely (at least once per month) ask my employees, manager, co-workers and family members, if what they see me doing, is moving me toward my personal safety vision. I will post my personal safety vision where I (and others) can see it every day. When I am making decisions, I will begin looking at my personal safety vision, and ask myself if the decision I am making will move me toward, or away from, my personal safety vision. If it is moving me away, I will make immediate course corrections/changes. What will I see happening differently as a result? (myself, others?) You need to fill this out. Who could help me with this, and how? You need to fill this out. I will share this action plan (and follow up) with? You need to fill this out. Slide 22
