Predicting About-to-Eat Moments for Just-in-Time Eating Intervention CORNELL UNIVERSITY AND VIBE GROUP AT MICROSOFT RESEARCH

Motivation Obesity is a leading cause of preventable death second only to smoking, resulting in 2.5 million deaths per year. Irregular eating habits and disproportion ate or inadequate dietary behaviors play a role in causing obesity. This paper is providing

Related Work Detecting eating event is one way that can contribute to the effort in reducing obesity. Manual self-reporting of various eating events with the help of a mobile device Semi-automatic and fully automatic food journaling tools which employ different sensor systems. a passive current eating event detector/tracker for building selfmonitoring interfaces All this previous work focus on Just-in-Time eating intervention

Detecting the current eating event itself is insufficient. What we really need is to be able to detect moments when we are about to eat. So that we can trigger healthy eating interventions just prior to the actual eating events. This paper, present a wearable sensing framework that predicts -- About-to-Eat moments -- Time until the Next Eating Event

Eating tracking and intervention survey The researcher conducted a survey for 75 participant All of the survey participants were asked 1- about the eating tracking tools they had ever used(type, period) 2-intervention related questions This survey helped in - Understanding the gap in existing eating tracking practices - Realizing the importance of the About-to-Eat moments prediction for designing an effective Just-in-Time eating intervention.

Data Collection They recruited 8 participants (3 female,5 male)for this study They used four wearable technologies including -a Microsoft Band, - a wearable microphone - an Affectiva Q sensor - an Android smartphone.

Predicting about to eat moments 1- Data cleaning and preprocessing: All the sensor streams captured by the ubiquitous computing frameworks (i.e., Microsoft Band, Affective Q sensor and Android application) time-stamped with their own real-time clock. All the sensor streams are time aligned. But The Microsoft Band s sampling rate varies a bit, so researchers worked to fix that.

2- Feature extraction and selection 1- They started with windowing the processed sensor time series -feature extraction window size -feature extraction window shift size 2- In order to extract features, a set of statistical functions was applied on each window. 3- They extracted 158 window-level features used the Correlation-based Feature Selection (CFS) criteria to select the subset of features. 4- The top contributing feature was step count followed by calorie expenditure. 5- The location-based features were dropped, because it fail to capture any general trends about About-to-Eat moments

3- Training about-to-eat detector They trained an About-to-Eat moment classifiers that differentiates between the About-to-Eat moments and the moments further in the past Non- about-to eat.

4- Training a regression model that predicts the Time until the Next Eating Event regression model using Weka toolbox, linear, Rep Tree, SMO and Tree Bagger The preprocessing, feature extraction and feature selection stage remained the same. The Time until the Next Eating Event was estimated from the end point of every feature extraction window in minutes

Conclusion Using signal processing and machine learning on raw multimodal sensor stream, researchers in this paper train an About-to-Eat moment classifier that reaches an average recall of 77%. The Time until the Next Eating Event regression model attains a correlation coefficient of 0.49.

Limitation and future work In future the researcher plan to : run a longitudinal study to collect a larger dataset with more participants during a longer time span. learn personalized About-to-Eat moment detector online and assess its accuracy. In future we also would like to explore the relationship between About-to Eat moments and affective states.
