1 Forensic Science Unit 3 Review Name Per. All tests are cumulative. The majority of the questions will be from the most recent unit. You should retry all homework problems from all three chapters. The test will include matching, multiple choice, short answer, and problem solving (like some of the mathematical concepts and sketching.) There will also be a practical part of the exam where you will have to use a microscope correctly and sketch and describe what you see. You may have to do exercises like in the following review packet. Bring a calculator and a pencil. Bring this completed packet to the test with you as a homework grade. 5 Review of the Seven Ss Seven Ss Scenario 1 A call was received from 7 Bruns Road reporting that a burglary had taken place. The first officer to arrive checked for any injured people and then sealed off the house. She then started looking for clues around the doors and windows to figure out where the burglar had entered and left. Then she separated the two people in the house in order to take their statements about what had happened. By then, more officers had arrived including the lead detective. 1. What step was not done in the correct order? 2. When should that step have been done? Seven Ss Scenario 2 The first responding officer at a hit and run arrived to find one person sitting on the curb and another still sitting in a car with a dented bumper. The officer sealed the area and then took photos of the car and the street and general area. Since the witnesses were already in separate places, he was able to next take statements. In the course of the interviews, it was found that the person on the curb had a large bump on her head and so the officer called for an ambulance. 1. What step was not done in the correct order? 2. When should that step have been done? Seven Ss Scenario 3 A dead body was found in a dumpster behind a gas station. A trail of blood smear lead to the back door of the gas station. 1. Most likely, what is the primary crime scene? 2. Most likely, what is the secondary crime scene?
6 Seven Ss Scenario 4 Below is a rough sketch of a crime scene. Draw a final sketch using a 1 cm = 8 cm scale. Review Questions for chapter 3 1. Be able to label the parts of the microscope and the cross section of skin. 2. Explain two ways to determine if a hair is from a human or an animal. 3. Use a case study to explain the importance of hair as evidence. (Case studies and student notes are on my website.)
7 4. State the three stages of hair growth and what happens during each. Stage 1: Stage 2: Stage 3: 5. Calculate the medullary index given the hair width and medulla width. For example, a hair is found with a width of 40 microns. The medulla is 15 microns wide. What is the MI? 6. Calculate how long ago a victim died if the hair is dyed and the date of hair dying is known. For example, a 240 mm long piece of hair is taken from the victim. The hair was dyed on December 3 rd. The dye starts 16 mm from the scalp end of the hair. If hair grows 0.44 mm per day, on what date did the person die? 7. What characteristics can point to a particular human race? 8. What is neutron activation analysis and how is it helpful? 9. What is meant by secondary transfer? 9a. Give an example.
