In each chapter, as he journeys from place to place; Holden engages in conversation with different people. Holden recalls the conversations he has for the reader, and he explains his thoughts. The reader is left to infer what the other people think about Holden. 1. Summarize the encounters Holden has by discussing the following questions and taking notes. Who is involved? When does the meeting occur? Where is Holden? Why is Holden talking to this person in the first place? What is happening or being said? What is Holden thinking? What is the significance of the conversation to him? What do you imagine the other characters are thinking? Overall, what is the significance of the exchange in relation to Holden's journey or search? 2. Share your group's summary with the rest of the class. S - 37
