1 Christian Heritage School Trumbull, CT 2018 Summer Reading Requirement for Students Entering Grade 10 Dear Parents and Students: Christian Heritage School is committed to excellence in spiritual growth and education. We are committed to the exercise of the mind through the reading of outstanding literature. The CHS Summer Reading Program aims to keep students engaged over the summer and prepare them for what they will be studying in the following school year. Studies have shown that most students who do not engage in intellectual activities over extended vacations lose some or many of the skills they acquired during the school year. We encourage all students to complete the summer reading of their choice in a timely manner. Please follow the instructions carefully for whatever class and selections apply. Please avoid common mistakes. Avoid choosing a book that you have read before. If there is a film version, do not watch it until after you have read the book. Avoid substituting study aids like Spark Notes since they are mere shadows of the real thing and are often inaccurate or biased. Lastly, read for your own enjoyment, looking forward to sharing your thoughts with your peers and your teachers in the fall. Happy reading this summer! Blessings, Kim Baylis English Department Chair Instructions: Students in the Upper School are required to read works related to their studies in the fall. Titles of books are listed below. Books are generally available in most libraries and bookstores, but do not wait until the last minute to find them! Answers to the questions below should be written (or typed) on a separate sheet of paper according to the given instructions. It is recommended to record answers while reading; that is easier (and likely more accurate) than answering the questions after completing the entire work. Note: Answers to questions will be checked by the instructor on the second day of school for a homework grade. Additionally, a test will be given and will be based on the study questions as well as the assigned memory work. Students will be allowed to bring these notes (that is, the answers to the questions that follow) to class on the day of the test. Therefore, the more careful and complete the work, the better the student will do on the test.

2 Works Assigned: English 10 (non-honors) Select one of the following works. Your selection must be one that you have never read before: The Tempest by William Shakespeare Macbeth by William Shakespeare Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe A Separate Peace by John Knowles Honors English 10 Read BOTH of the following plays: The Tempest by William Shakespeare AND Macbeth by William Shakespeare (Note: Honors English 10 students are not permitted to read Robinson Crusoe or A Separate Peace to fulfill this requirement because they will be reading them during the school year.) *All students entering tenth grade must complete the SAT review through Khan Academy as explained on the document entitled Khan Academy Summer Work. Completion of this work will be recorded as an English grade this fall. Please Note: The English Department at Christian Heritage School would also like to point out that during the summer there are numerous local opportunities to see classic drama. Students entering tenth grade will be reading A Midsummer Night s Dream and Julius Caesar during the year in addition to the summer reading selections of Macbeth and The Tempest. For information about some of the productions in our area, please refer to the Summer Theater in the Region document on the kingsmen.org website.
