Acceptability of a Mobile Sensing Platform for Collecting and Sharing Behavioral Biomarkers
Cogito ADVANCED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Cogito s Advanced Product Development Team partners with academic institutions, government agencies, and commercial organizations to discover new ways to improve how people work and live through behavioral analytics. 2
DARPA Project Detection and Computational Analysis of Psychological Signals (DCAPS): Analyze patterns in everyday behaviors Focus on PTSD, depression, suicidal ideation Create a general metric of psychological health High risk, high reward 3
The Problem Clinicians and behavioral health providers need a reliable mechanism to understand how patients are doing in order to: Recognize mental health problems Develop tailored intervention strategies Deliver effective treatment 4
Current Solution to Problem Self-Report Questionnaires RETEROSPECTIVE Patients are asked to recall symptomology over a month, year, or more. SUBJECTIVE, BIASED Reporting is unreliable as it is subject to recall-bias, favorability-bias, mood dependent memory, and more. EPISODIC Patients fill out questionnaires infrequently, and often irregularly. TIME-CONSUMING Questionnaires are lengthy, tedious and repetitive. DISORDER-SPECIFIC Most questionnaires are disease-specific, making them only applicable to individuals with particular symptomology and therefore difficult to compare across patients. 5
DARPA DCAPS Project Goals We hypothesized that accurate models of behavioral indicators of PTSD and depression symptoms in both veteran and nonveteran populations could be derived from mobile-based digital trace data and auditory signals. 6

Evaluation of Feasibility and Acceptability PARTICIPANT PERCEPTION OF PRIVACY CONCERN A privacy metric was created by averaging responses to the following questions: Q: Do you feel that the application on the phone would infringe on a user s personal privacy? Answers were 1-5 Likert ratings, with 5 being most comfortable. 11

Participant Interest in Sharing INDIVIDUAL ANONYMOUS Q: If you were using this app, how interested would you be in sharing your individualized personal health status. Q: If you were using this app, how interested would you be in sharing your anonymous health status (cannot be traced backed to you). Results from questions regarding 8 types of sharing parties were combined to create an individual sharing metric.
