Case Studies 1. Toi Ora Besided on the mission statement, here are some case study information I found useful, most of them are about both art and mental health. These research examples helps me form my visual language and brainstorming what contant and visual style I would apply to my art pieces. I came across Toi Ora trust during research and found it suit my research purpose very much. Toi Ora Trust is an award winning art organisation that provides innovation and leadership in the field of creativity in mental health recovery. Their aim is to promote social, intellectual, artistic and creative pursuits that enrich people s lives, improve capacity and contribute to the destigmatisation around mental health thus encouraging social change. They have artisits working there as both mental sector and artists. I got in contact with their manager Faye Norman and visited the place to find out more.

So I went there and Faye kindly gave a a tour around the studio place. These photos were taken inside Toi Ora studio, is where the students come and having classes. She told me Toi Ora has been successful running for 20 years and still going while some other company closed. There are heaps of class including painting, printmaking, writing, acting, gutair, music and so on. They created a friendly enviroment for people who came and willing to participant.

2.Gemma Correll Gemma Corell is a British illustrator, her artworks illustrated her experience of anxiety and depression in a fun and easy-understanding way, and my mission statements to destigmatisation and raise awareness around mental health, let people know more about what is it like to have depression or anxiety. I found her works suits my mission statement of destigmatisation and raise awareness very well. That s why I chose her works as one of the case studies.

3.Iris Grace Iris Grace, a little girl from Britian with an extraordinary talent, also, she is on the Autistic Spectrum. She express her self through art. Her mother is a photographer and documented her journey through painting and published a book, hope to share her art to inspire and raise awareness of the condition of spectrum. Inspired by her story, I did a bit more research on the way she paints, and how art thearpy works. Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The creative process involved in expressing one s self artistically can help people to resolve issues as well as develop and manage their behaviors and feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem and awareness.

4. TOBY ALLEN An artist who suffering from anxiety illustrates mental illnesses as real monsters using his visual language. His inspirations came from his ownexperiences and thoughts, also it is the importance of develop an own visual language that can easliy convey the meaning to viewers.

5. Adam Tan was an artist based in Auckland. He was of Malaysian-Chinese descent, born and raised in New Zealand. He had been missing since the 27th of October after running away from Waitakere Hospital, where his family had taken him after he became distressed, and voluntarily admitted himself to the mental health ward on arrival. During an escorted transfer to the ward he unexpectedly broke away from a security officer and nurse, scaled a metal fence and ran through a car park before disappearing. On Monday 3rd of November a body was discovered in a stream behind the Trusts Stadium on Central Park Drive in Henderson, which was later identified as Adam Tan. Below are some of his artworks he created from his point of view of the world. Like the case study of Iris Grace I mentioned early in the document, their a works helps people to understand what their inner world s like.

Images showing skills and processes

Interviews 1 WIth Lona Wei I caught up with my friends Lona, who s also majoring in art, the three pieces showing on the right are her art works. Have you made works about metal health before? Well not in a obvious way, but these pieces are about inner world and feelings, depressed, I guesss that kind of related. Descirbing these artworks? What s your journey ike while making these pieces? The first pieces is describing how artist express theirself under everybody else s view. I gave the faces dramatic looks to show how easily people could lost and get eccected by other people s influence. The piece on the bottom pleft was inspired by Mozart, with a piano. The meaning behind it is how an artist deal with his/her derpessed feelings. As artists, what do you think we are capable of doing to improve to the mental health society? To produce the work that could influence other people thoughts (in a positive way). Art thearpy is also a way. Who s your artistic inspirations? Félix Vallotton, Christophe Chabouté, Van Gogh.

Interviews 2 Luckly Lona s mother used to major in psychology, so I also did a qick interview with her regarding questions about mental health. Can you talk breifly about your eperience? Well there s a lot to talk about, Psychology is a big question, it hleps you to understand better for youself and the people around you. Can you talk a bit more on the importance of knowing Psychology? Yes it is obviously important for all of us to know a bit on mental helath, there are lots of reason to cause mental illness. Through Any ideas on art thearpy? Of course there s art therapy, which including art, dancing, music and so on. It helps the person to express him/herself in a no-verble way. Art helps processing and convey the uncover feelings. Any people can do art thearpies, it helps you to speak out your inner conflicts and feelings.

Interview 3. With Gemma Correll. I contacted her through s, here s the content: Do you have any advice for those art/design students who have too much pressure about their future careers? As I showed in my illustrations, I have been there before. Just comfort youself even you feel worried, things gonna work out somehow. As artists, what do you think we are capable of doing to improve to the mental health society? Do what you can, what you are capable of doing. Express yourself, spread the message. Your favotite artists? There s too many! Camilla Engman, Lab partners, Sandra Juto, Beatrice Alemagna...I love their styles.
