Resolution of established infection is very possible however requires informed timely intervention. Mark will work through case examples to highlight the key decision-making points that are the difference between a successful outcome and failure. The myth of the necessity of external fixation to resolve osteomyelitis will also be explored. The life span of horses is increasing, with horses expected to live into their thirties and beyond. As a result, geriatric medicine has become part of everyday life for the equine vet. This talk will introduce geriatric medicine, with a focus on preventative health management, body condition scoring, and nutritional management of the older horse. Gastrointestinal diagnostics Vomiting and diarrhea are common clinical signs for which dogs and cats may be presented for evaluation. There are many potential diagnostic options available to vets in practice. This lecture will address when it is appropriate to undertake diagnostic testing, and what tests are indicated in different settings. 09:45am Meals for wheels Osteoarthritis is often a consequence of developmental orthopedic disease or acquired traumatic or inflammatory conditions. A multimodal approach to managing patients with osteoarthritis is best. We will discuss developmental and acquired orthopedic disease and the role of nutrition and supplements in managing these patients. Many owners are not aware of the early behavioural signs of CDS, contributing to why this highly prevalent syndrome is underreported. What foods these morsels be? Nutritional assessment is an important part of an examination and necessary to determine if and what nutritional recommendations should be made. Nutritional assessment includes body condition scoring, muscle condition scoring, and assessment of diet and husbandry. This session will discuss tools available to assist clinicians in recognise chronic pain in small animal patients and explore treatment options currently available. Management strategies depend on the underlying diagnosis and capability of owners to pursue invasive diagnostics or treatments. We will discuss management of primary liver disease with a focus on nutritional and pharmacological management. 2:45pm Leon Warne Managing old dogmas under anaesthesia During this interactive myth busting session, Dr Warne intends to refute some of the commonly held myths and clarify certain misconceptions surrounding the practice of veterinary anaesthesia, present current understanding of commonly misunderstood issues, and aid practitioners in providing higher quality care for their small animal patients. Annemarie Cullimore Laminitis our old foe Laminitis is becoming the number one reason for euthanasia, a close second to colic, in the horse. This presentation will focus on the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of the geriatric horse with laminitis. Thyroid disease in cats and dogs Low thyroid hormone levels are recognised with some frequency in dogs but are they all hypothyroid? Hyperthyroidism is commonly recognised in clinical practice. The clinical picture, diagnosis and management of both diseases will be addressed in this presentation. 3:45pm

3 4:00pm Tales from the crypt Irritable Bowel Disease Chronic enteropathies occur commonly in dogs and cats. Biopsy often reveals lymphoplasmacytic inflammation without a more specific diagnosis. As the diagnosis of lymphoplasmacytic inflammation is not specific, management can be frustrating and a stepwise approach is required. We will discuss management of inflammatory bowel disease emphasising the role of nutrition and different types of diets in addition to pharmacological therapy. David Byrne Cardiac and respiratory disease of the older horse Age is a risk factor for cardiac disease, which can have both performance and health implications. Infectious and noninfectious lung disease can cause significant quality of life impairment. The aim of this talk is to discuss recent updates on the most common causes of cardiorespiratory disease in older horses. Kate Lindsey Managing the worried golden oldie: anxiety therapy for the senior patient The accumulation of physical and psychological change over a dog s lifetime is a significant risk factor for the development of anxiety and related conditions. Improving and maintaining brain health is key to addressing anxiety-based disease. Fiona Lacey Breeding the older mare complications, risks and likely outcomes Older mares present unique challenges, whether they be the older maiden mare with a non-elastic cervix or the multiparous mare whose uterus sags into the depths of her abdomen! I will identify the key problems and provide solutions that will help you deal with these mares and reliably inform your clients of inherent risk factors and likely success rates. Healthy nutrition is essential for pet health and can also help to fight ageing at the cellular level. Pete Harding Surgery for the equine geriatric do the risks outweigh the benefits? Haematology Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in dogs and cats. While surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are used to treat cancer, patients with malignancies are rarely cured. Survival is not always associated with improved quality of life. We will discuss the role of nutrition and supplements to help patients live well with cancer. With a growing population of equine geriatrics, more horse owners want veterinary advice regarding surgical management for conditions of their beloved elderly horses. This talk covers the risks that geriatric patients face in surgery and anaesthesia, assesses the surgical success rates of geriatrics compared to the juvenile equine and covers alternatives to traditional surgical techniques. A Complete Blood Count is a common test undertaken in companion animal practice, but sometimes it can seem a bit overwhelming to interpret the results. This presentation will show a systematic approach to the interpretation of the results, considering red cell parameters, white blood cells and platelets. 10:45am 11:00am Hyperadrenocorticism Whilst primarily a canine disease, hyperadrenocorticism is occasionally recognised in cats as well. The causes and clinical picture of the disease will be reviewed. The diagnostic options for confirmation of the disease will also be addressed, along with therapy. Monitoring will also be discussed, along with discussion of some new monitoring techniques that have been proposed. Pete Harding Management of common musculoskeletal conditions in the geriatric horse Common musculoskeletal conditions of the geriatric horse will be covered along with the associated management options. This will be followed by a review of the current products available for management of musculoskeletal pain and arthritis in the geriatric horse. Sue Beetson Clinical pathology in chronic disease Sue will cover some of the common changes and patterns we expect to see as animals age and a variety of common chronic conditions encountered in everyday practice. We will discuss how to use these changes to monitor our patients progress and clinical condition.

5 12:00pm Hypoadrenocorticism Hypoadrenocorticism is a disease primarily seen in dogs in clinical practice. The aetiology and variable clinical presentations will be discussed using case examples. The diagnosis of the disease will be addressed, along with therapy and appropriate monitoring of affected patients. Martyn King Management of corneal ulcers in horses This talk will discuss the normal structure and function of the equine eye and the principles of normal corneal wound healing. We will outline a practical approach to equine eye examination and cover the diagnosis and management of the most common types of corneal ulcers. Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia affects a wider range of dog types than previously thought. The spectrum of HD ranges tremendously from those that are asymptomatic to those that require surgical intervention or euthanasia. It is commonly thought that any such action will result in widespread horrifying paradoxes that threaten to tear apart the spacetime continuum. Consequently, many philosophers, physicists and science fiction authors have concluded that while time travel is fun to think about, it is logically impossible. Sam will demonstrate that time travel is perfectly possible, and that we have no cause to worry about world ending paradoxes. He will also equip every would-be time traveller with the skills and know-how that they require to be successful in their travels into the past. 3.00pm 3:10pm 3:40pm Urine trouble Chronic kidney disease is an irreversible but eventually progressive disease, often without an underlying diagnosis. Treatment involves managing the excesses and deficiencies that occur with loss of functional renal mass. We will discuss staging and management of chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats including nutritional and pharmacological treatment. Information on managing IRIS stage 1 chronic kidney disease and role of protein will be also be presented. Royal Canin Presentation David Byrne Neoplasia in middle-aged and geriatric horses Increasing age is a factor that increases the susceptibility to neoplasia. The aim of this talk is to provide the most recent information on common tumours found in middleaged and geriatric horses, with an emphasis on clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment options. Yoko Clinch Turning back time; a nurse s guide to improving geriatric mobility and wellbeing This talk will focus on practical things veterinary nurses can do for their patients as we discuss a veterinary rehabilitation practitioner s holistic approach to improving geriatric mobility & wellbeing. You will gain an understanding of massage, stretching and therapeutic exercise; when they are indicated, and how they are done. 4.40pm Disc disease: the emergency of a chronic problem.
