4 How do we attract young researchers into the field of clinical nutrition? We see the problem when we have the solution To improve clinical outcome by improving nutrition care is a low hanging apple in todays clinical context when drug development to improve outcome marginally draw enourmous costs. The million dollar questions: - What hampers young professionals interest for mutrition? - What is needed to facilitate the nutrition interest from young professionals?

6 The Nordic Nutrition Academy Six 3-day residential programs (Wednesday lunch Friday lunch) over a period of two years. Alternating between the Nordic countries (ESPEN Congress Istanbul) ending at ESPEN Congress Gothenburg ending at ESPEN Congress Copenhagen English is the professional language

8 The Nordic Nutrition Academy Open application 25 young health/nutrition professionals in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden Not necessarily yet active in research A mix of physicians-dietitians-nurses 9 mentors: Leadership by Professors Jörgen Larsson, Karolinska Institutet, and Ingvar Bosaeus, Sahlgrenska, Gothenburg A mix of high-profiled scientists Henrik Höjgaard-Rasmussen, Öivind Irtum, Jens Kondrup, Ann Ödlund-Olin, Mette Holst, Elisabet Rothenberg, Jan Wernerman, Anne-Marie Beck, Tommy Cederholm, Folke Hammarqvist, Lars Ellegård as teachers and role-models.

11 The ESPEN Course of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Annual course one week Started as an annual Advanced course (Maastricht) 1991 Since 2011 the ESPEN Course is rotating among countries in Eastern Europe 2011 Vilnius, Lithuania 2012 Dubrovnik, Croatia 2013 Gödöllö, Hungary 2014 Hradec Kralove, Czech Republik 2015 Bucharest, Rumania 2016 Wieliczka, Poland

12 The Life-Long Learning (LLL) Program A major part of ESPENs Educational activities a global success! Started 12 years ago Anyone can register On-line courses and live courses ( att.) 40 up-dated topics/3-4 modules in each State-of-the-art text, cases, questionnaires, exams.

13 The Life-Long Learning (LLL) Program Live courses are organized at the ESPEN Congresses (Fri and Sat) by the National PEN-societies (sometimes in collaboration with local medical nutrition industry) Each course provides CME that may be compiled to an ESPEN Diploma 60 CME on-line 40 CME live 20 CME final examination

14 Pre-GLLL Pre-graduate LLL 11 basic/essential topics - ~30 slides/each To be used by teachers in Medical Schools around the whole world Provided free from the LLL website

15 The only way to improve clinical practice is to increase knowledge by improved research Common prejudices around clinical nutrition: If nature wants you to lose weight when ill, there is a meaning in that By reduced body weight there will be less strain on the heart A couple of days without food doesn t hurt anyone Obesity is the major public health nutrition problem, thus to lose a couple of pounds when at hospital is only good for you Effectiveness and efficacy of nutritional therapy - A cochrane systematic review.
