2 NEW & NOTEWORTHY FIRST PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT ESTABLISHED IN PAKISTAN SIH has established rst ever Palliative care Unit in Pakistan. The Palliative Care Center of Excellence at SIH is launched with the goal of giving every patient with serious illness access to high-quality palliative care focused on relieving symptoms, maximizing quality of life and ensuring care that concentrates on patients' goals. Inter professional teams of nurses, social workers, pharmacists and doctors are required to work together to meet the complex medical, emotional and spiritual needs of seriously ill patients and their loved ones. The unit will be headed by the Dr. Aqdas Kazi who has recently joined SIH as Associate Consultant Palliative Care. COLLABORATION BETWEEN PIMS AND SIH A meeting was held between Shifa International Hospitals Ltd and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences with the purpose of collaborating in different areas to promote better healthcare facility and to build healthy relationship among two largest hospitals of twin cities. This idea was encouraged from both sides. On behalf of SIH, Dr. Mian Amjad Sohail, Director Medical Services has been nominated as focal person for future strategies and coordination and to facilitate / assist the entire process of collaboration between the two institutes. The collaboration efforts between both institutes will include but not limited to the following areas; Emergency Services Postgraduate Medical Education Medical Students Rotation Research Nursing Education Technology Training Hospital Waste Management Any other area, where collaboration is needed After initial meetings a MOU (memorandum of Understanding) may be signed between PIMS & SIH so as to continue cooperation for subsequent years. SLEEP CENTRE AT SIH A SLEEP CENTRE has been established at Shifa International Hospitals Ltd to provide diagnostic and treatment services to patients with Sleep Disorders and related medical disorders. Addition of Sleep Centre at SIH will help in establishing Centre of Excellence in Neurology / Pulmonary Care. 3 FRC PATH EXAM HELD AT SIH INFECTION PREVENTION Shifa International Hospital was nd selected to hold 2 time fellowship of the FRC Path Exam (Royal College of Pathologists UK) which was held on March 24, Shifa was the Only Center in Pakistan of this examination. Royal college of Pathologists UK is the only institution which undertakes s upervision of training and examination for 18 individual specialties within the discipline of pathology in the United Kingdom. Dr. Tahir Aziz Ahmad, Dr. Imran Nazir Ahmad, Dr. Nadira Mamoon and Dr. Humaira Nasir, conducted the examination. Shifa is privileged to be trusted by the international body for a highly esteemed professional examination in the crucial eld of pathology. The Hospital has always ensured the availability of top of the facilities for conducting professional examination. Shifa's Post Graduate Medical Education department played a pivotal role and provided excellent administrative support to facilitate the examination. Post Graduate Medical Education department plans to expand the spectrum of its academic activities in this direction by holding preparatory course, workshops and examination for pathology and other specialties. Hand Hygiene Practices Hand hygiene is our top priority and an essential intervention to prevent healthcare-associated infections and transmission of organisms and diseases. All healthcare providers including Physicians, Nurses, Technicians, Respiratory Therapists and other Para Medical Staff have been empowered by the hospital management to ask another colleague to comply with hand washing practices. After touching patient surroundings PEOPLE SIH WELCOMES THREE PHYSICIANS Dr. Abdul Malik Sheikh (Associate Consultant Pediatric Cardiology). A graduate of King Edward Medical College, Lahore and is a Fellow of College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan in Pediatrics & Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Sheikh is also working as Assistant Professor at Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology and has previously worked as Assistant Professor and Senior Registrar/Fellow at Children Hospital, Lahore. Dr. Rushqia Mukhtar (Associate Consultant Dermatologist) Dr. Rushqia is a graduate of Rawalpindi Medical College and has completed her Fellowship from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan in Dermatology. She has been part of SIH as FCPS trainee. She is also working as Supervisor & Consultant Dermatologist/ HOD at PAEC Hospital, Islamabad and has worked as Registrar Dermatology at Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Dr. Aqdas Kazi (Associate Consultant Palliative Care) She is a graduate of Rawalpindi Medical College and a Member of Royal College of Physicians, UK. Previously, she has worked as Associate Consultant Palliative Care at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore. 03

4 GROWTH CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Qamar Hafeez Kiani, C o n s u l t a n t G e n e r a l Surgeon has now passed E u r o p e a n B o a r d o f S u r g e r y Q u a l i c a t i o n ( E B S ) w i t h distinction in Coloproctology from Munich, Germany. Dr. Kiani is already a Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and Member of Royal College of Surgeons of England, UK. It is really a great matter of pride and honor for the institution. We congra-tulate Dr. Darakhshan Jabeen, on h e r n e w ofcial title D i r e c t o r P G M E & CME. Now, she will be overseeing a l l C o n t i n u i n g M e d i c a l Education Activities (CMEs) along with PGME. We believe this change will streamline the CME Program at SIH for the benet of Clinical Staff. An organization, no matter how well designed, is only as good as the people who live and work in it. Dee Hock PROMOTIONS Dr. Musab Riaz has been promoted from Associate Consultant Nuclear Medicine to Consultant Nuclear Medicine. He is a graduate of Rawalpindi Medical College and has received his MSc degree in Nuclear Medicine. In addition he has done his Fellowship from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan as well as a certication of Diplomate Board of Nuclear Cardiology from American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. Dr. Naheed Gul has been promoted from Associate Consultant Internal Medicine to Consultant Internal Medicine. She is a graduate from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar and a Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, in General Medicine. She also served at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar for three years as Senior Registrar. Dr. Uzma Tahseen has been promoted from Associate Consultant Internal Medicine to Consultant Internal Medicine. She is a graduate of Rawalpindi Medical College and has done her Fellowship from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan in Internal Medicine. Dr. Sohail Naseem has been promoted from Associate Consultant Pulmonologist & Critical Care to Consultant Pulmonologist & Critical Care. He has done his graduation from Dow Medical College and has completed his Fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine from Medical College of Georgia, USA. He also has American Board Certications in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Uzma Qasim has been promoted from Assistant Consultant Radiation Oncologist to Associate Consultant Radiation Oncologist. She is a graduate of Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore and has done her Fellowship from Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons. 04

5 PGME & CME HIGHLIGHTS CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME): To facilitate all departments in their respective CME activities, the Ofce of Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME) has been approved as the central body for coordination of all CME activities at SIH and redesignated as Ofce of PGME/CME. To stream line a mechanism for conducting CMEs at SIH, the department of PGME has been given the role of a sole central coordinating body for all such activities. All future CME/ Conferences/ Workshops/ Master Classes/ Grand Rounds/ Guest Lectures at SIH will be coordinated through the PGME Department under the supervision Director PGME. This will include all professional, nancial and administrative matters. for details: MASTER CLASS IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE In the series of Master Class it was 7th class arranged for the general practitioners and young Physicians, to brush up their knowledge and educate them about new guidelines, protocols and new developments in the world. This is an accumulative effort of Consultants Neurosurgeons & PGME, who have made this milestone possible. SIH has now set sights to make the department of Orthopedics a training department for FCPS candidates as well, where state of the art facilities are already being provided with the help of highly qualied and trained physicians. MULTIDISCIPLINARY CPC Multidisciplinary CPC program has been restarted with objective of extracting the real essence of an effective learning method and to highlight the problems encountered while managing a problem case and bring an open discussion. 8 WHAT IS NEW IN IRB Dr. Ejaz Khan presented the Annual Report of IRB & EC for year In 2014 IRB added 3 new members and 3 members left the Ethics Committee. A total of 10 meetings were held in last year including 2 special meeting of sub-committee of Termination of Pregnancy. In last year IRB revised the research application forms and sub-committee's member. Data Ownership Issues were also streamlined and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of IRB were added. A total of 102 protocols were received, 75 protocols were approved, 19 were pending for review by PIs and 6 sent to members for review. Nine Research Proposals were discussed in monthly meetings of IRB & EC. Two studies were disapproved. According to statistics Radiology and SCM submits large number of protocols, (mostly Retrospective and Cross Sectional Studies) In the report Common Findings were highlighted including: Lack of signature from the HOD on the application form Improperly constructed protocols, proformas, consent forms and participant information sheets Use of inappropriate wording and phrasing, lack of participant information and consent documents. He also presented attendance of the member for the whole year. Overall the members were satised with working of the committee and sent the Annual Report to Members, Medical Director and CEO CLINICAL RESEARCH UPDATES DAY LONG WORKSHOP Shifa clinical Research Center organized a day long workshop at C-0 conference room on Introduction to clinical research. The workshop comprised of various interactive sessions aiming at highlighting basic concepts of clinical research, manuscript writing and proposal development, various observational study designs, key statistical tests involved in experiments, and randomized controlled trials. After each session, there was a Q & A session with a problem solving scenario based discussion. The workshop aimed at enhancing capacity building for all the health care professionals working at SIH, but participants from Khyber Medical University and other post graduate residents from KPK province also participated in the workshop. The workshop was followed by certicate distribution to all participants by Director Clinical Research, Dr. Kh. Mujtaba Quadri. Objectives and methods mostly not clear Lack of consideration for condentiality requirements Synopsis / Dissertation had no prior approval by IRB & EC before being submitted to CPSP After PI has been given suggestions to be incorporated, some had delayed responses. MOU WITH NUST A memorandum of Understanding between SIH and School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME), NUST has been signed on 18th February 2015 at SIH. This MOU has been signed in order to promote research activities and to initiate developmental projects in eld of simulation and device innovation. This collaborative effort was made possible after series of discussions of the SCRC team members with faculty members of SMME. It was agreed to initiate projects of mutual interest to promote research and to carry forward their results to more applied level. AEME CONFERENCE The Association for Excellence in Medical Education (AEME) conference was held at Foundation University, Islamabad from th th 6 to 8 March 2015 under the theme Continuum of Education in Health Profession: Enhancing Quality. The Shifa Clinical Research Center represented SIH, under this theme and conducted a 90 min workshop on A-Z of Randomized Controlled Trials. This workshop included interactive session on recruitment, outcomes, randomization & statistical analysis. Workshop was followed by Q&A session. The SCRC team is looking forward to represent SIH on more research forums. SCRC is now relocated on Ground oor A Block, SIH, adjacent to QM department. The SCRC website is 08
