1 Core Curriculum Updated 5/12/09 Core seminars are a 2-year longitudinal curriculum occurring on Friday afternoons during ambulatory care blocks. The purpose of the core curriculum is to expose residents to areas of medicine that are important to the practice of primary care medicine, but not commonly taught in other venues. The format is a small group, interactive, case-based seminar. Residents are given learning objectives and reading assignments prior to each seminar and are expected to actively participate in discussions. Below is a list of general topics covered during the core curriculum. On every second, and fourth Friday, Core seminars are held jointly in the Department of Medicine (with all PGY2 and PGY3 residents on block). These seminars are larger in structure and are noted below with bold. On non-joint days, an additional hour is scheduled for case discussions with clinical specialists. These seminars are scheduled by the residents in conjunction with the weekly core seminars. dolescent Medicine (even years) Common Problems in dolescent Medicine llergy and Immunology (odd years) llergic rhinitis Drug allergies/desensitization lternative Medicine (odd years) Overview of lternative Therapies Cardiology (even years) Cardiac Exam Congestive Heart Failure Valvular Heart Disease Outpatient Management of Coronary rtery Disease/Stress Tests Community & Social Medicine (odd years if space allows) Health Policy Overview Healthcare Financing Organization of Health Care Medicine in Underserved Communities- Commonly Encountered Issues ddiction Medicine Smoking Cessation Dermatology (even years) Review of the Skin Exam Common Dermatological Disorders - Diagnosis Common Dermatological Disorders - Treatment Endocrine (odd years) Insulin in diabetics Diabetes Update: overview of glucose management, oral therapies, and clinical guidelines pproach to the Patient with Thyroid Disease Lipid Management
