1 History of the Mental Health Investigative Unit Our unit was formed in 1989 with a total of one Sergeant and three mental health deputies. Currently, we have one Lieutenant, one Sergeant, six mental health investigators, and an administrative assistant. We are housed with Denton County MHMR at 2519 Scripture.

2 Budget of Our Unit and Services Provided to The Community In the last several budget years we have experienced an increase in funding of more than $300, to bring our current budget to approximately $700, annually.

3 Involvement of the MHIU in the Treatment of Mental Patients in Denton County We have a free standing database of every patient we have contacted since the inception of the unit. Totals more than 6800 files. This enables our investigators to often have an excellent historical baseline for assessment of our patients. Our investigators are involved in the treatment of the patient from the first contact with law enforcement until the patient is released from the court order and state hospital. What is so unique about this approach?

4 Who can detain an individual for an emergency apprehension and detention (A&D)? Any peace officer in the State of Texas Why does the DCSO have a specialized unit if any peace officer may A&D an individual? Money ~ the cost of inpatient psychiatric care typically cannot be absorbed by municipal police departments Transportation ~ the majority of municipal police agencies in Denton County do not have the man power to transport individuals to the state hospitals as well as back and forth to court

5 Why is the Denton County process so different from the surrounding agencies such as Dallas and Tarrant County? Counties to our south have public hospital systems which absorb the costs of inpatient hospitalization The public hospital systems of those counties provide a safe environment to monitor and treat emotionally disturbed individuals pending a court hearing Denton County does not have a public hospital system; therefore, we don t have a Parkland or JPS (Tarrant County equivalent to Parkland) for our patients to receive inpatient psychiatric treatmen.t

6 Without a public hospital system where do Denton County patients go? Currently MHMR and DCSO contract with four private facilities so that patients can receive crisis stabilization if it is determined that a patient meets criteria for emergency inpatient psychiatric care. The two facilities are: Millwood (Arlington, TX) ~ a contract was signed with Millwood when Denton County had no alternatives for inpatient psychiatric care other than North Texas State Hospital in Wichita Falls Wise Regional Hospital In Decatur, Texas Mayhill Hospital in Denton, Texas University Behavioral Health (UBH) (Denton, TX) ~ a contract was signed with this facility shortly after it opened in 2006 Patients with insurance or the ability to finance their own psychiatric care may choose to seek treatment at Mayhill Hospital Behavioral Health and Physical Rehabilitation in Denton or any other private facility, including Millwood and UBH.
