2 Non-Elective Care Trafford Urgent Care Centre A new Urgent Care Centre has replaced the former 24/7 A&E at Trafford General Hospital. It is similar in function to the former A&E, except that it is no longer available 24/7. The Urgent Care Centre is consultant-led and staffed by a highly skilled medical and nursing team. It is open 8am midnight, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and provides treatment for adults and children for conditions that are not life-threatening but require prompt care. Examples of conditions that can be treated at Trafford Urgent Care Centre include: Mild/moderate chest pain/breathing difficulties Suspected fractures, sprains and sports injuries Exacerbation of a long term condition Wounds, burns and other injuries. Children of all ages can be seen in the Trafford Urgent Care Centre if their condition is not life-threatening. For more serious conditions, they should be taken to the Royal Manchester Children s Hospital Emergency Department or an alternative acute hospital A&E. The Urgent Care Centre has adult and paediatric resuscitation facilities and the staff are trained in both advanced adult and paediatric resuscitation. Any patients who present with more serious conditions or who require emergency surgery will be stabilised and transferred to an alternative acute hospital. Medically unwell patients The Acute Medical Unit (formerly named the Medical Assessment Unit) at Trafford General continues to provide consultant physician-led care for unwell medical patients and has access to on-site High Dependency care. You can refer patients to the Acute Medical Unit at Trafford General 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for rapid assessment and treatment. Referrals can be made via the on-call Medical Registrar, tel: , bleep number 274. You will be able to discuss and determine the most appropriate for the further assessment, treatment and care of your patient with the hospital doctor. The Acute Medical Unit is managed by a consultant physician of the week who will be available to speak to you about your patient if required. In addition to the assessment beds, the unit also manages a number of ambulatory care pathways and provides ambulatory care clinics three afternoons a week. Two medical wards are available for patients needing acute care. These are supported by a High Dependency Unit for patients who need more intensive observation, treatment and nursing care than is possible on a general medical ward. Patients who require intensive support for conditions such as cardiac chest pain, acute respiratory failure, or a major gastric bleed should be referred to an alternative hospital. If your patient requires an ambulance and you would like him/her to be taken to Trafford General, you will need to clearly state this to NWAS. NWAS will act on your clinical opinion unless the patient has deteriorated further. In this case, NWAS will use its pathfinder system to determine the most appropriate location for the patient s care. Surgically unwell patients Trafford General no longer provides emergency surgery so any patients who may require emergency surgery should be referred to an alternative acute hospital. Elective day surgery continues to be provided in specialties such as General Surgery, ENT and Gynaecology. Manchester Centre at Trafford General provides both inpatient and day surgery for elective procedures. Non-elective care at Altrincham Hospital Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit The Minor Injuries Unit in Altrincham is staffed by experienced emergency nurse practitioners who can assess and treat a wide range of minor injuries including broken limbs, simple wounds, bites, minor burns, cuts and lacerations, and foreign bodies in the nose or ear. It is located off Greenwood Street at the rear of Altrincham Hospital, WA14 1PE. It is open 8am 8pm on weekdays and 10am 6pm on weekends and bank holidays (except Christmas, Boxing and New Year s Day when it is closed).
