14 Trauma and Acute Care Program A regionally recognized program focused on patient care and injury prevention Mount Sinai St. Luke s is a certified Trauma Center. Our trauma team cares for and supports patients every step of their journey, starting in the Emergency Department (ED) and following them through the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), rehabilitation and discharge. 15 Raymond Wedderburn, MD Chief, Division of Trauma and Critical Care Trauma prevention through community education In addition to providing the highest level of critical care to MSSL s patients, trauma prevention is another important component of our Trauma and Acute Care Program. Our Trauma Prevention and Community Outreach Coordinator goes into communities and provides classes in Senior Centers, Community Health Fairs and other venues on: The Distracted Walker Program specifically addresses the safety challenges faced by New Yorkers in the modern age of electronic communication. Falls Prevention Classes teach balance exercises and other techniques to prevent falls. Working together during a critical time The trauma team provides initial assessment, resuscitation and ongoing care to patients coming into the ED, and who meet specific predetermined injury criteria. All trauma patients requiring hospitalization will be admitted to St. Luke s Trauma Service, under Mount Sinai St. Luke s also provides education to the health care community and is actively involved in trauma care organizations locally, regionally and nationally. The 9 bed SICU is fully staffed (24/7) by surgical and anesthesia house staff supported by board certified intensivists in surgery and anesthesiology. Trauma patients are seen daily during our multidisciplinary trauma rounds, where a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists and clinical pharmacists all have an opportunity to provide input to the plan of care and serve as resources for the patient and their family or friends. The trauma program staff works to insure that the patient and family needs are met during what can be a very frightening and difficult time. St. Luke s Hospital also has a fully accredited Acute Rehabilitation Unit where many of our patients go during recovery, keeping them in contact with the members of the trauma care team they got to know. The focus of our Limb Preservation and Wound Care Program is on the prevention of life altering chronic wounds of the lower extremity and limb loss through innovative treatment strategies. We combine these plans of care with our nationally recognized research program, patient education, and advanced clinical techniques.
