1 DEPARTM ENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY AND CRITICAL CARE The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute (CHRI) is committed in providing quality patient care. We have specialised pre-anaesthetic check-up clinic where all the patients are assessed prior to surgery. A dedicated operation theatre complex housing eight state-of-the-art operating rooms equipped with latest equipments, instruments and facilities is available for smooth & safe conduct of anesthesia and surgeries where hands on training is imparted to the students. Besides the operation theatre complex, specialised OTs are available for Ophthalmology, Reproductive M edicine and Endoscopy procedures. General ICU, Post Anesthesia Care Unit & Speciality ICUs like Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Neuro-surgery, Cardiology and Paediatrics providing 24 X 7 emergency services are situated in the OT complex, so that immediate care and expertise is provided in emergency situations. Post operatively patients are monitored in Post-operative Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where acute pain management services are provided. The courses conducted by the department are M D(Anesthesiology) since 2012,with an intake of 4 students each academic year, B.Sc. Allied health Sciences (Anesthesia technology) since 2011, B.Sc. Allied health Sciences (Emergency & Trauma Care) since The students who have qualified their postgraduate and undergraduate courses are all placed in highly competent fields like liver transplantation unit, Neuro-anesthesia and Critical Care services, Interventional Pain M anagement units, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia services and as faculty in reputed medical colleges. Due to the changes in teaching and learning methods, the radical changes in the health care delivery and rapid growth of technology have challenged the traditional way of clinical skills development and led to the emergence of clinical skills laboratories(csls) in the medical

2 education of many medical and nursing schools. Our CSL which is used to impart skills to medical students, CRRI s, post graduate students, nursing students and B.Sc Allied Health Sciences students. Several manikins are available for acquiring these skills. The skill stations are managed department wise and the faculty of the respective department imparts training using specific manikins. The skill stations / manikins practiced by the Department of Anesthesiology are: 1. Resusci Anne for BLS 2. ALS Stimulator for ACLS 3. Laerdal Airway Trainer for airway management 4. AT Kelly Torso for endotracheal intubation & LM A insertion 5. Lumbar puncture stimulator for sub arachnoid block 6. M ulti venepuncture arm for IV cannulation & blood sampling 7. Arterial arm stick for arterial cannulation 8. Injection trainer for various routes of injection 9. Pneumothorax trainer 10. Torso for central venous cannulation 11. M odel of respiratory tract for anatomy 12.
