1 Travaux du Mustum National dlhistoire Naturelle ((Grigore Antipaw Vol. XLIII pp TERMINALIA OF THREE STENOPOGONINAE SPECIES (DIPTERA: ASILIDAE) FROM SPAIN MEDEEA WEINBERG Abstract. There are figured for the first time the genitalia components of both sexes for: Rhadinus megalonyx Loew, 1856, Holopogon flavotibialis Strobl, 1909 and Stenopogon brevipennis (Meigen, 1820). RCsurnC. On y figure pour la premiere fois les composants gknitaux des 2 sexes pour 3 especes: Rhadinus megalonyx Loew, 1856, Holopogon flavotibialis Strobl et Stenopogon brevipennis (Meigen, 1820). Keywords: Stenopogoninae, genitalia. Rhadinus megalonyx, Holopogon flavofibialis, Stenopogon brevipennis. In the material from Juniperus turifera L. forest of the Los Monegros region, Zaragoza Spain (Weinberg, Blasco-Zumeta, 2001) we identified several Stenopogoninae species. The present study is focussed on 3 of the species belonging to this Asilidae subfamilies. Finding at our disposal both sexes in all these 3 cases and the genitalia components of them not being illustrated previously in the litterature, I proposed to do that now. I complete the diagnosis of these 3 species by illustrations and description of genitalia components of both sexes. The species are discussed in philetic order by Lehr (1988). RESULTS Rhadinus megalonyx Loew, 1856 (Fig. 1) This species was first described from Egypt, and as it results from Lehr (op. cit.) was quotted also from Transcaucasus, Asia: Syria, Iraq, Israel, Iran; North Africa: Tunisia, Libia, Egypt. Theodor (1 980) mentions it from Israel and give a succinet description of the genitalia components to the male without any illustration. We now illustrate all the components for both sexes (Fig. 1) with their description. o" genitalia: The hypopigium showed notorsion and the anus is in its dorsal position. Epandrium is not divided, triangular long and wider proximally, cerci short with rounded end (Fig. 1 A). Hypandrium reduced partly fused with gonocoxites, with a narrow free space only at the basal part of the fusion (Fig. 1 B). A characteristic feature is the fusion between the hypandrium and the gonocoxites alike by genus Lasoipogon (Weinberg, 1978). Gonocoxites with a transverse apical process with two black tubercles (Fig. 1 C, D) and the gonostylus situated at the apex of gonocoxites. The gonostylus pointed

Aedeagus tubular slightly curvet ventrally and with narrow apex (Fig. 1 E). 9 genitalia: The ovipositor formed by tergites 8 and 9 (acanthophorites) (Fig. 1 F). Hypoginium apical bilobed with rounded transparent end and with short pointed lateral processes (Fig. 1 G). Gonapodema wider apically and with rounded arms (Fig. 1 H). Holopogonflavotibialis Strobl, 1909 (Fig. 2) Till now it is known only from Spain. Strobl in the same year, describes 2 species from this country, but only females. From the description given by Engel in 1930, this species are mainly different between them by their dimension and by their wings coloration. Holopogon jlavotibialis is allways under 5 mm and with wings completely uncolored and Holopogon dusmetii is over 7 mm and with wings basal brown and apical light uncolored. Unfortunately, no paper issued later after Engel (op. cit.) could bring more other precisians. I mark the fact that at the specimens analyzed bu me, the male shows the same characters as those given by Engel (op. cit.) for the female, with the exception of the strong setae on the facial gillosity which are black. I give now the description of the genitalia components for both sexes at Holopogonflavotibialis (Fig. 2). 6 genitalia: The hypopigium showed no torsion. Hypopygium smal, epandrium divided, parts triangular, cerci wide and with the apex pointed, slightly curvet in inner part (Fig. 2 A). Hypandrium triangular (Fig. 2 B). Gonopods large, gonocoxite with two apical processes, one ventral, broad rounded apical and one dorsal, slender and pointed apical. Gonostylus long slender, basal large and with pointed end (Fig. 2 C-E). Aedeagus broadly conical with long apodeme (Fig. 2 F, G). 9 gerzitalia: ovipositor with tergite 8 large basal and acanthophorites with 5 black spines (Fig. 2 H). Hypoginium bilobed apically and in middle with a small invagination strong sclerotized and posterior with a large rounded sclerotized bridge, ending apically with two termination on each part (Fig. 2 1). Gonapodema wider rounded basal and with a small rounded invagination, the opening of the spermathecae. Apical gonapodema is small (Fig. 2 L). Spermathecae with long tubes which ending in a sclerotized spiral (Fig. 2 M). Stenopogon brevipenrzis (Meigen, 1 820) (Fig. 3) Lehr (op. cit.) quotted this species from Portugal, Spain and Tunisia. Stenopogon brevipennis was well described by Strobl, under the name of Stenopogon taboardae (Engel, op. cit.: 304) from Spain. But Engel (op. cit.) himself is confused by describing species Stenopogon brevipennis in comparison with other 3 species, to whom it is totally different. Engel (op, cit.) for no moment approaches Stenopogon brevipenrlis to the species clearly described by Strobl from Spain, in spite the fact that Strobl himself states that St. taboardae is closely related to St. brevipennis.

6 246 MEDEEA WEINBERG Lehr (op, cit.) signals from Spain both species. Now I figure and describe the genitalia components of both sexes to Stenopogon brevipennis specimens identified by me. cl' genitalia: The hypopigium black-brown, showed no torsion. Epandrium divided. Pars of epandrium with obliquely truncate end. Cerci long with obliquely truncate end (Fig. 3 A). Hypandrium broadly trapezoidal, apical bilobed with concave posterior margin and on the middle of lateral parts (Fig. 3 B). Gonopods large, gonocoxites apical with two rounded plate-shaped processe. Gonostylus slender with curved pointed end (Fig. 3 C, D). Aedeagus broadly conical with short narrow apical part. Aedeagus with distinct shoulders-shaped processes and long, broad apodeme (Fig. 3 E, F). 9 genitalia: ovipositor longer than segment 7. Acamthophorites with 4 reddis-brown spines (Fig. 3 G). Hypoginium apical bilobed sclerotized with two shoulders-shaped processes (Fig. 3 H). Gonapodema U-shaped and arms outside with triangular pointed processes (Fig. 3 I). Spermathecae with sclerotized tubes and spiral. Between tubs and spiral, apically the tubs are broad and transparent (Fig. 3 I). Conclusions As we go deeper in analysing the status of a species, starting from the classical works of this family, I find allways something not clear, obscure and could not be solved without having at the disposal the type specimens, who sewed at the first description of the species involved. So by further comparative analysis between the genitalia for the species H.flavotibialis and H. dusmetii, there could be establish a sure criterium of their separate existence. Regarding St. brevipennis and St. taboardae I have a strong covinction that St. taboardae Strobl is synonym with St. brevipennis, but final proof of it would be the genitalia comparison for the type specimens of both species. Only by a critical review of all data and by work on new material from the same zone where they were described, it could be achieve the completion of a sure diagnosis of a species, i. d. the genitalia components. These were the gouls and the ways of our work here, for these 3 Stenopogoninae species. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks are due to Petrufa Dumitrici who inked all the original drawings and for making the plates and anonymous referees for editorial advice.
