The introduction of the Wallstent, Gianturco- Roubin and Palmaz-Schatz stents completely changed the interventional cardiology landscape. But the early days of stenting brought a whole new set of problems that had to be solved before stenting could become mainstream. Over many centuries delivery of healthcare has been a constantly evolving process. These changes parallel new developments in understanding and treatment. As the pace of advancements has accelerated rapidly in recent decades, changes in delivery have lagged behind - and/or changes have been inappropriate. The healthcare system as we know it today is radically different from what it was only thirty years ago. Thirty years from now (or even ten years from now), even more radical changes can be expected. Peter Fitzgerald has been on the cutting edge of innovation for many decades. He is uniquely qualified to give us a glimpse into the future.
