2 There is nothing more nourishing for the brain than uninterrupted, restful sleep. This is why I have chosen it as this month s school readiness topic. Your child needs good sleep and you do too! But how much sleep and how? The chart below should be of some help in determining if you child is getting enough healthy sleep: Age Average hours of sleep Tips for sleeping Newborns Infants 3-11 months From 10 1/2-18 hours per day, irregular schedule, awake for 1-3 hours at a time hours at night 30 minute - 2 hour naps, from 1-4 times per day. This tapers off as they reach age one. Look for signs of sleepiness (rubbing eyes, fussing and/or crying.) Watch for these cues and put baby in the crib when drowsy, not asleep. This way they learn to put themselves to sleep. An important skill! Thank goodness, usually by six months of age, your baby no longer needs night feedings and these infants start seeping through the night; percent will do so by nine months of age. Infants typically sleep 9-12 hours during the night and take 30 minute to two-hour naps, one to four times a day fewer as they reach age one. This is the time to focus on developing regular daytime and bedtime schedules. Make bedtime a predictable routine. Things like sharing a book, kissing and hugging family members, a lullaby and off to bed. Make sure that your baby has a quiet, Toddlers 1-3 years hours of sleep within a 24 hour day As children reach about 18 months of age, their naptimes start to decrease to once a day and typically last about one to three hours. Make sure that your child s nap is not so late in the day that it interferes with bedtime so that you don t throw off your child s sleep cycle. This is the time that children start resisting bedtime so be firm. Some children also experience nighttime fears and/or nightmares. Hold fast and maintain your child s daily sleep schedule and consistent bedtime routine. Make the bedroom environment the same every night and throughout the night. The use of a security object such as a blanket or stuffed animal can ease your little one s bedtime stress. These are just some common guidelines. You know your child best. If you are struggling with setting up a sleep routine or you feel that your child is excessively anxious and resistant, be sure and let your Learning Consultant know. Good sleep is essential! Our team is here to help you! - Debbie Justice TLC is seeking to hire a fulltime Fiscal Officer. Position requires, at a minimum, a Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Business or Finance.
