1 Department of Health Promotion and Community Health Faculty of Health Sciences American University of Beirut HPCH 342 (2 cr) SPECIAL TOPICS IN HEALTH PROMOTION AND COMMUNITY HEALTH Tobacco Control Fall semester AY Course Instructor: Rima Nakkash, DrPH Van Dyck Hall- Room 315 Extension: Office hours: By appointment Class time and location: Wed 5:30-7:10 Van Dyck Room 332 Course description: This course will cover fundamental as well as best practices in tobacco control promotion and policy from international, regional, and local perspectives. Students will learn the components of an effective tobacco control strategy and read the latest cutting edge research in that area. The sessions will cover core elements of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the research evidence-base on which it was built. It will also cover current tobacco control surveillance methods and discuss various evaluations of tobacco control policies. International and local expert speakers and lecturers will be invited when possible. Course assessments will be inspired from current real life examples and case studies. Learning objectives (LO s) 1. Discuss contemporary national, regional, and international tobacco control policy issues. 2. Demonstrate understanding of core tobacco control issues. 3. Apply ethical principles in tobacco control policy and practice 4. Discuss role of academia and civil society in tobacco control policy and practice. Required readings Assigned readings will be posted on Moodle. Course requirements and student evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the following: 1
2 1. Participation: Completing assigned readings prior to each class is important for effective class participation as well as engagement in class discussions and activities. 10% 2. Contribution to social media and building awareness about the law: o Weekly contribution (one per week) of specific comments/posts to the 174 Facebook page with topics related to the weekly class discussions. Posts should be dated and submitted to the instructor in word format. (10%) And, o One field monitoring trip to report on violations. A 100 word short description should be submitted to the instructor. 10% 3. Presentation: The student will be assigned to search for a tobacco control story in the current media as per topic assigned for that session and present it in class. Facilitating will include briefly presenting the main points of the topic and engaging all students in a guided discussion. Each student will be responsible for presenting and facilitating the class discussion at least once per semester depending on class size. This will take up 10 minutes at the beginning of each class. Guidelines for effective facilitation will be agreed upon in class. 10% LO (1,2,3) 4. Essay: Each student will provide a written word essay on a tobacco control issue of interest to be decided upon with the instructor. The assignment is to be submitted at the end of the course. The exact structure of the essay will be discussed in class and a rubric that outlines criteria for evaluation will be shared. The due date will be decided with the rest of the class. All Assignments must be submitted in hard copy and on time. Please place all assignment in my box at HERU. 40 %LO(2,3,4) 5. Quizzes: Quizzes will be unannounced and will take place a maximum of 2 times per semester. Quizzes will assess understanding of readings for that class session or of prior concepts discussed in class. They will be in form of short open ended questions. 20% LO(1,2) Note: The Rules and Regulations of the University stipulate that students cannot miss more than 1/5 of the sessions of any one course (p.46 of University Graduate Catalogue). Any student missing more can be dropped from the course by the instructor without warning. Cell phones must be turned off or put on silence and left in purses or bags during class. Leaving the room to answer a cell phone is not tolerated. In the unlikely case of an emergency situation which necessitated that you pay attention to a cell phone, please inform the instructor and arrangements can be made. 2
3 There is NO midterm or final exam in this class. Academic Integrity Education is demanding and time management is essential. Do not hesitate to use the resources around you but do not cut corners. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Please review the Student Code of Conduct in your handbook and familiarize yourself with definitions and penalties. If you re in doubt about what constitutes plagiarism, ask your instructor because it is your responsibility to know. The American University of Beirut has a strict anti-cheating and anti-plagiarism policy. Penalties include failing marks on the assignment in question, suspension or expulsion from University and a permanent mention of the disciplinary action in the student s records.
