Phone No: Fax No: NAME AND OBJECTIVES OF THE INITIATIVE:- Integration of Tobacco Control activities with School health Programme Objectives: 1) To ensure good health of the school children 2) To increase awareness in school children, teachers and parents regarding health hazards of tobacco use BRIEF HISTORY:- School Health Programme (SHP) is a Single, largest time framed health programme operating in the State of Gujarat since Medical Officers with their teams examine all school going children on date as per Micro plan. Health Education is given to all children. (Including Personal Hygiene & Ill effect of Tobacco).Minor ailments are treated on the spot in the school. On fixed days, specialist services are made available for all referred school children at Community Health Centers, Taluka Hospitals and District Hospitals. Children requiring examination by specialist are being sent to the related referral centers as per Micro plan, where different experts like Ophthalmic Surgeon, Physician, Pediatrician, Dentist, Skin specialist and E.N.T. surgeon examine and treat them. Tartary level (super specialty) services are also provided if child having heart, Kidney of other major diseases. In 2010, SHP is being a School Health Week rather than one day health check up involving Education, Health, Sanitation and Panchayat department. According microplan SHS will continue from 3 rd Dec 10 to
2 15 th Feb 11. SHP covers 1.51 Crore children 27% population of Gujarat. SHP covers all 26 District & 18,716 villages (including 7 Corporation) of the State. New formats are developed for school health programme with special emphasis on newer components. New columns are added for Tobacco related habits, Dental examination & cancer. With this new register formats, now data will be available about tobacco consumption from all over the state district, block and PHC wise. This will be useful for future planning and implementation for tobacco control in state. Also, it will be useful tool to see trend in tobacco consumption over years. Adding new component of tobacco control under school health Programme and development of new formats for data collection of tobacco uses, shows commitment of state departments and integration of tobacco control programme activities in general health services. A guideline for school Teachers has been developed by department of health, government of Gujarat. More than one lac primary and higher secondary teachers were trained all over the state by SETCOM (Satellite Communication). (Annexure: I) Gram Panchayat of all the villages was address by SETCOM just before the starting of programme. A chapter includes information regarding chemicals and cancerogens in the tobacco smoke, Health hazards of tobacco use, Health and Economical benefits of tobacco use, Tobacco Control Act- COTPA 2003 as well as guideline for tobacco free school. School Health training module for teachers has clearly define the role of teacher in the control of tobacco use. MAJOR OUTCOMES / IMPACT:- Till 5 th Feb 2011, around 62 lac primary, 20 lac secondary and higher secondary students, 27 lac anganwadi children and 84 thousand non school going children was undergone basic health examination and all were given education and information regarding tobacco use. Around fifteen thousand patents meeting and seventeen thousand Dada-Dadi meeting were organized in which various health related issues including tobacco health hazards and role of family was discussed. Other than health examination various activities like singing, health related games, debate was facilitated by health team and teachers which had included tobacco related issues with other health topics.
3 CHALLENGES FACED/LEARNING S:- Good commitment and cooperation as well as co ordination with other department is needed to cover up these much of population. However, in SHP 2010, we have achieved a great success and had a good cooperation from other department. NEXT STEPS:- These efforts will be continued every year with the newer initiative as and when required. PHOTOGRAPHS:- SUGGESTIONS/ ANY OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION:- Integration of SHP with NTCP will lead to sensitization of school teachers as well as of parents of school going children. It will make aware the school children regarding tobacco issues. It will make a benchmark for tobacco free school.
