1 March 08, 2018 PM launches National Nutrition Mission, and pan India expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan On the occasion of International Women s Day, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi launched the National Nutrition Mission and Pan India Expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) covering all 640 districts of the Country at a mega event held at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. Addressing the large gathering on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that through the power of technology, the entire nation is connected with Jhunjhunu. He appreciated Jhunjhunu district for furthering the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao movement. Mission Indradhanush has brought an extremely positive change in the lives of women and children. The acronym PM should remind everyone of Poshan Mission from now onwards said by PM The Prime Minister further emphasized that both the National Nutrition Mission and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao should be run in the form of a Jan Andolan to make them a success on the ground. A jan andolan (public revolution) is needed to save the girl child and to improve nutrition levels among girls

2 Backround: Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme since its launch by the Prime Minister on January 22 nd, Several new initiatives have been taken by the government the successful implementation of BBBP in 161 districts, six months maternity leave for working women, training of women sarpanches, universal implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. The government has setup 200 Sakhi Centres for women affected by violence and more than one lakh women have availed of the services of these centres till date. A Shelter home for one thousand widows Similarly, a forensic lab is being setup in Chandigarh for speedy forensic processing of rape cases. The ten districts which were felicitated by the Prime Minister today have been awarded for their contribution in the following categories: 1. Effective community engangement (Six districts awarded): Raigarh (Chattisgarh), Sikar (Rajasthan), Bijapur (Karnataka), North Sikkim (Sikkim), Tarantaran (Punjab), Hyderabad (Telengana) 2. Enforcement of PC&PNDT Act (Two Districts awarded): Sonipat (Haryana), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) 3. Enabling education of Girl Child (Two districts awarded): Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan), Udhampur (Jammu & Kashmir)

3 As per data available in the Health Management Information System, there has been an improvement in the sex ratio at birth. National Nutrition Mission The National Nutrition Mission (NNM) has been set up with a three year budget of Rs crore commencing from The NNM is a comprehensive approach towards raising nutrition level in the country on a war footing. NNM targets to reduce stunting, under-nutrition, anemia (among young children, women and adolescent girls) and reduce low birth weight by 2%, 2%, 3% and 2% per annum respectively. Although the target to reduce Stunting is at least 2% p.a., Mission would strive to achieve reduction in Stunting from 38.4% (NFHS-4) to 25% by 2022 (Mission 25 by 2022). More than 10 crore people will be benefitted by this programme. All the States and districts will be covered in a phased manner i.e. 315 districts in , 235 districts in and remaining districts in IIIDEM organizes 12-day training programme on Capacity Development for Election Management for ITEC countries, in association with MEA It is a 12-day training programme.

4 The India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) is conducting the training programme. It is been organized under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India. As many as 29 senior and mid-level officials from EMBs of 21 ITEC countries are participating in the programme. Government announces launch of SUVIDHA Rs. 2.50, 100% Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) SUVIDHA It is a 100% Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin, under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The affordable sanitary napkin will be available for Rs per pad at over 3200 Janaushadhi Kendras across India and would ensure Swachhta, Swasthya and Suvidha for the underprivileged Women of India. This step taken by the Department of Pharmaceuticals will ensure the achievement of Prime Minster Shri Narendra Modi s vision of Affordable and Quality Healthcare for All.

5 SUVIDHA napkins would be physically available at all Janaushadhi Kendras in the country by May 28, 2018 World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Trend: According to the National Family Health Survey , about 58 percent of women aged between 15 to 24 years use locally prepared napkins, sanitary napkins and tampons. Further, about 78 percent women in urban areas use hygienic methods of protection during menstrual period; only 48 percent women in rural areas have access to clean sanitary napkins. The 100% biodegradable SUVIDHA napkin would ensure Swachhta. A special additive is added in the SUVIDHA napkin which makes it biodegradable when it reacts with oxygen after it is used and discarded. Swachh Shakti 2018 The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, in association with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, organized a Women s Convention called Swachh Shakti It was organized on the occasion of International Women s Day, at Luckno 8000 women sarpanches, 3000 women Swachhagrahis and women champions from other walks of life from across the country were recognised for their outstanding contribution towards making a Swachh Bharat. Stree Swabhiman It is a CSC Initiative for Promoting Women s Health and Hygiene.

6 The workshop showcased the impact and progress made by the Women Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) in promoting women s health and hygiene among the poor and marginalized communities in India, through the Common Services Centres (CSCs). women VLEs, who have set up sanitary napkin units under Stree Swabhiman project, in advancing women s health and hygiene in rural areas, apart from enhancing women s empowerment. I Metros I-METROS is an association of all Indian Metro Rail companies. It was launched by Sh. P K Sinha, Cabinet Secretary, Government of India at the Conference on Indian Metros: Collaborating for Excellence held at Metro Bhawan. The platform will be a forum for exchange of ideas, pooling of knowledge and sharing of experience, best practices, innovations etc. among the Indian Metro Rail companies to nurture excellence in performance. This society will be registered under Society Registration Act The objective of forming this association is to provide a common platform for all Metro rail companies for sharing experience, information, best practices, innovations etc. This association will also undertake and promote techno-economic studies and research. It will safeguard the interest and rights of metro rail companies and will be resource tank of information for decision making. Cabinet Secretary Sh. P K Sinha also released The Operator s Story - a publication by World Bank and Railway and Transport Strategy Centre

7 (RTSC), Imperial College London, on findings of the research on What makes Metros successful. Udyam Sakhi Portal On the occasion of International Women s Day the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) launched a portal for women entrepreneurs of India. India has around 8 million women who have started and are running their own businesses and the Ministry of MSME believes that the women in India can play a vital role in the growth of the Indian economy. The portal is a network for nurturing entrepreneurship and creating business models for low cost products and services in order to empower women and make them selfreliant and self-sufficient. The portal provides assistance through its platform for entrepreneurship learning tools, incubation facility, training programs for fund raising, providing mentors, and one-on-one investor meet, provide market survey facility and technical assistance.
