3 3 Marijuana Common, Dangerous, and Still Illegal Contrary to popular belief, not all teens smoke pot. Only about one in five 10th graders report they used marijuana within the past month. Fewer than one in four high school seniors is a current marijuana user. Marijuana pot, reefer, grass, joint, stick, ganja, rope, blunts, smoke, bud, weed, bhang is one of the most widely used illicit drugs in the United States and very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana Just because it s common doesn t mean marijuana is safe. In fact, the marijuana sold today is far stronger than it was two or three decades ago, and far more dangerous. What You May Not Know Some people may think that smoking a joint is just a mellow way to relax. They don t realize that using marijuana can cause memory problems reduced concentration and coordination increased appetite decreased inhibitions bloodshot eyes, dry mouth, and dry throat lower testosterone levels and sperm counts in men increased testosterone in women, which can cause acne and increased facial and body hair paranoia diminished or complete loss of sexual pleasure psychological dependence so that over time, more of the drug is needed to get the same effect. Damage Marijuana smokers face the same cancer risks as tobacco smokers, even though they may smoke only a few joints a day compared to a pack or more of cigarettes. Damage from smoking pot includes deteriorating performance at school or at work experiencing a burn out characterized by muddled thinking, acute frustration, depression, and isolation impaired sexual development and fertility, including production of abnormal sperm and menstrual irregularities damage to lungs and pulmonary system (one marijuana joint is equal to approximately 25 commercial cigarettes) exposure to illegal drug culture. Marijuana Is Still Illegal National Crime Prevention Council, 1700 K Street, NW, Second Floor, Washington, DC While there are groups who encourage the legalization of marijuana, it is still illegal. Depending on where an individual is arrested, penalties for possession, use, and dealing can be harsh. Convicted individuals face fines, possible imprisonment, a criminal record, and lost job opportunities. Some people are confused about marijuana s medical uses. There are no medically accepted uses for smoking marijuana. THC, the active chemical in marijuana, is manufactured into a pill and available with a prescription to treat nausea and vomiting that occur with some cancer treatments and to help people with AIDS gain weight.

6 6 SafeTravel with electronic devices and batteries Quick Action Guide Spare Battery Safety Tips YES, It s Safe to bring your laptop computer, cell phone, camera, personal digital assistant (PDA), or other battery-powered device on board a passenger aircraft! Batteries pose little risk contained in the devices they power. Leave batteries in your equipment -- it is the safest place. Always carry your laptop, cell phone, or other electronic device with you. Do not check in luggage. Use only chargers designed for your type of batteries. If unsure about compatibility, contact the manufacturer. Don t mix and match! If you carry a spare battery, follow the safety tips in the right column. U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration store packaging, tape across the battery's metal parts (terminals), or place each Pack spare batteries in carryon baggage, not the baggage you check at the counter. Keep loose batteries away from metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry. Keep spare batteries in the store packaging they came in. If you do not have the terminal battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package. Prevent crushing, puncturing, or putting a high degree of pressure on the battery. Always Remember... Don t carry damaged or recalled batteries or equipment on aircraft. Check battery recall information at the manufacturer's website, or at the Consumer Product Safety Commission ( Avoid dropping laptop computers or other devices. Purchase batteries from reliable sources. Avoid packing battery-powered equipment in checked baggage. If you must carry a battery-powered device in any baggage, package it to prevent inadvertent activation. For instance, you should pack a cordless power tool in a protective case, with a trigger lock engaged.

10 10 Home FAA bans pilots from using personal electronic devices February 12, 2014 Washington On-duty pilots are now prohibited from using personal electronic devices in the cockpit, according to a Federal Aviation Administration final rule announced Feb. 11. The final rule, which is set to go into effect April 13, is intended to help eliminate distractions in the cockpit and keep pilots focused on operating the aircraft. It bans pilots from using cell phones, laptops, tablets or other electronic devices for personal use during all stages of a flight other than for flight-related emergencies. The final rule codifies previous guidance from FAA warning pilots and carriers about the dangers of using distracting devices in the cockpit. It also follows a January 2013 proposal that received 63 mostly positive comments from industry representatives, transportation safety advocates and pilots. Those who opposed the proposal, including the Air Line Pilots Association, International, stated that airlines should have the final say on if or when on-duty pilots can use personal electronic devices in the cockpit.
