5 Develop an awareness of substance misuse Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Know what substances are commonly misused and why 2. Be able to recognise possible signs of substance misuse 3. Be aware of the social and personal effects of substance misuse 4. Be aware of perceptions of, and responses to substance misuse Evidence requirements 1. Achieving outcomes All outcomes must be achieved and evidenced in your portfolio of evidence. Evidence may include practical observed work, witness statements, audiovisual media, projects, assignments, case studies, reflective accounts, oral/written questioning and/or other forms of evidence. 2. 10 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Know what substances are commonly misused and why Reasons why people misuse substances: Peer pressure, experimentation, recreation, escape, rebellion, addiction. (This list is not exhaustive.) Types of misused substances: Stimulants (e.g. cocaine, amphetamines, smoking), depressants (e.g. alcohol, cannabis), opiates (e.g. heroin, morphine), sedatives (e.g. diazepam, temazepam), hallucinogens (e.g. ecstasy, LSD), solvents (e.g. glue, lighter fuel). Personal factors: Personality, age, substance use by peers or relatives, situational environment, personal problems (e.g. money, relationships). Outcome 2: Be able to recognise possible signs of substance misuse Signs or symptoms of substance misuse: Physical signs (e.g. unexplained weight loss, poor co-ordination, needle marks), behavioural signs (e.g. change in personality or behaviour, mood swings, loss of concentration, paranoia), symptoms (e.g. vomiting, sweating). Misleading signs or symptoms: Loss of appetite with a medical problem, mood swings with adolescence, needle marks with diabetics. (This list is not exhaustive.) 8 UV11359

11 Outcome 3: Be aware of the social and personal effects of substance misuse Harmful effects of substance misuse on individuals: Physical and mental health, physical and mental addiction, relationships with family and peers, reduced work performance (This list is not exhaustive.) Harmful effects of substance misuse on society: Anti-social behaviour, crime, unemployment and reduced work productivity, costs to healthcare system, spread of infectious diseases. (This list is not exhaustive.) Where to get support and advice: Local drug clinic or drop in centre, GP surgery, National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse, FRANK, NHS Choices. Outcome 4: Be aware of perceptions of, and responses to substance misuse Effect of stereotyping on users: Decrease self-esteem, prevents users from receiving appropriate support and treatment, no consideration of personal reasons or factors. Effect of media reporting on perceptions: Negative perceptions (e.g. users are criminals, users have had a bad upbringing), positive perceptions (e.g. recognising substance misuse, availability of support and advice). Ways to respond to substance misuse: Raise awareness of substance misuse, recognise signs and symptoms, challenge stereotypes, provide advice and support, provide treatment and rehabilitation. UV
