2 What is Toluene? Toluene is a colorless, water liquid that has a smell associated with paint thinners. Toluene s symbol is CH3 The substance is attached to the phenyl group (Cyclic group of atoms)

3 Brief history Older name: Toluol. (tol-yoo-ohl, -awl) Named by Swedish chemist, Jöns Jacob Berzelius. Extract from the tropical Colombian tree Myroxylon balsamum.

4 Properties water-insoluble, with the smell of paint-thinners. Colourless, characteristic odor. Contains Hydrocarbons. (Hydrogen and Carbon) Toluene and Sodium.

5 Uses of Toluene Mixed in Gasoline for Octane rating. Used in polymers to create nylon. Mixed to create multiple kinds of organic chemicals. Used in clothing. Used to create TNT. Paint thinners and nail polish. Nylon rope.

9 Health impacts of toluene Inhaling high levels can lead to death or unconsciousness Repeatedly breathing toluene for a long time like Sniffing paint or glue can cause death or permanent brain damage High levels may affect kidneys, nervous system, liver, brain, and heart. Low moderate levels can cause Dizziness, confusion, headache, weakness, and nausea

11 Certain populations Toluene abuse or Glue sniffing has become widespread amoung children and teens As you know, more children like to sniff/ smell gasoline or glue because they enjoy the smell of the substance Teens and children are not ware that this substance is contained in gasoline and glue. This is why this age group is more at risk than others

12 Environmental issues Toluene enters the environment when you use materials that contain paint, paint thinners, fingernail polish and gasoline. When working with these materials Toluene evaporates and becomes with the air you breathe. Toluene enters surface water and groundwater Leaking underground storage tanks at gasoline stations and other facilities. Toluene does not usually stay in the environment It is readily broken down to other chemicals by microorganisms in soil and evaporates from surface soils.

13 Ways to get Toluene off of you If in eyes rinse your eyes with water for 15 minutes If gets on your clothes wash your clothes about 3 or 4 times If gets in you drink or inhale it rinse your mouth out with water until you d taste it anymore Try anyway you can think of because if you wait it will just get worse

14 How does Toluene affect your health? Toluene can affect your health your nervous system effects can be temporary, such as headaches, dizziness, or unconsciousness. However, effects such as incoordination, and vision and hearing loss may become permanent with repeated exposure. High levels of toluene exposure during pregnancy, such as those may lead to retardation of mental abilities and growth in children. Other health effects of potential concern may include immune, kidney, liver, and reproductive effects.
