2 Prescription Drugs in the U.S. At least half of all Americans take one prescription drug regularly, with one in six taking three or more medications. In 2007, over 268 million prescriptions were filled in CA retail pharmacies. Of these prescriptions there were 38.5 million controlled substance prescriptions written by 157,000 practitioners, and filled by 8,146 pharmacies.

3 CURES Program The California Prescription-Monitoring Program, CURES is committed to increasing awareness, and combating pharmaceutical drug diversion and abuse without interfering with legitimate medical practice and patient care. BUREAU OF NARCOTIC ENFORCEMENT

4 Vision Empower doctors and pharmacies with timely and accurate online access to prescription monitoring information that is an effective point of prevention of prescription abuse of controlled substances. Enhance the detection of controlled substance misuse/abuse with an effective online query and analysis of timely accurate prescription information. Increase usability by providing easy access to patient information.

5 States have the authority to regulate Many states have found Prescription Monitoring Programs (PMPs) to be one of the most effective tools to identify and prevent certain types of drug diversion at the prescriber, pharmacy, and patient levels.

6 Prescription Monitoring Programs Collect data from pharmacies licensed by the state - excludes VA, Military, and Indian Health Medication dispensed - (not just authorized) Controlled substances and (non-controlled) drugs of abuse Operated by state agency All payment types, including cash

8 PMP Facts CA has the oldest PMP 1939 CA maintains approximately 100 million entries There are 35 states that have operational or enacted PMPs.

14 Patient Activity Report What is a Patient Activity Report (PAR)? A printout which contains the prescribing and dispensing history contained in the CURES data system for Schedule II, III, & IV controlled substances to patients under the requesting medical provider s care. Only available to prescribers and pharmacists The CURES Program also may initiate PAR s to the health care community
