DRUG USE LEVELS IN FRANCE IN 2010 First results from the Health Barometer survey (OFDT /INPES analysis) OFDT 3 avenue du Stade de France Saint-Denis La Plaine cedex Tel : Fax : Marie-Line Tovar 2012 Annual Expert meeting June - Lisbon

Introduction The Health Barometer survey (INPES the French national institute for prevention and education in health) SERIES OF SURVEYS REFERENCE POPULATION SAMPLING SIZE SAMPLING DESIGNS DATA COLLECTION RESPONSE RATE (five-yearly) Households /85 years olds. 25,000 / 30,000 Two-stages random design ( households, individuals). Telephone interviews (mobile phone only and landline) 61 % 2

OBJECTIVE MAIN OBJECTIVE To provide information on various French health behaviours and attitudes Specific drugs objectives, related to the population aged 15 to 64 : To estimate the prevalence (%) of psychoactive substance use To describe the diversity of practices (lifetime use, current use, regular use ) To follow the evolutions of different psychoactive substances uses To analyze the association between consumption of these substances and demographic characteristics To participate in regional data collection 3

METHODOLOGY Time frame: The data were collected from october 2009 to july 2010 Sample size : randomized sample around 27,700 persons years olds. Area population : national household with telephone (mobile phone only and landline). Age range questionnaire: Among years olds (illegal subtances) 4

METHODOLOGY The response rate and its calculation To determine the response rate of this GPS : it is necessary to put in relation the number of overall respondents with the number of eligible individuals. Extrapolate the ineligible households within the group of non-respondents households. The non-response rate observed at the end of the investigation, except withdrawals and missed appointments, can thus be estimated at 39% in the landline study and in the mobile study. 5

METHODOLOGY Various steps to increase the response rate: Letter of introduction before the data collection In the event of non-response of the households, automatic call-back up at different times and different days If the individual is unavailable, an appointment is made A single call-back of "refusing households", given that it is not necessarily the individual who could have been chosen that has opposed a refusal. This procedure has cut down by 10% refusals to participate.

Estimate of the number of users 7

// = not available Estimate of the number of users of psychoactive substances in France among the years old. Cannabis is the most used illicit substance in France Sources : Health Barometer 2010 (INPES), ESCAPAD 2008 (OFDT), ESPAD 2007 (OFDT), HBSC (service du rectorat de Toulouse) // = not available 8
