SYRINGE PICKUP safety around syringes in Greater Dandenong a community how-to guide for safely removing syringes from our environment adac

getting syringes cleaned up help keep our city safer by making sure syringes are removed from public places you can get syringes cleaned up by reporting their location to SEADS Community Syringe Pick-up Service leave a clear message with all your details and your call will be returned Greater Dandenong Council after-hours, public holidays, weekends

handling syringes safely If you decide to clean up syringes read these guidelines first and have a few items ready being prepared use gardening or disposable gloves use a rigid container with a lid, eg, a detergent bottle use a stick or tongs to move the syringe away from surrounding rubbish Syringe disposal containers are available from Council or a Needle Syringe Program. If you use another container instead, be aware that glass bottles or aluminum cans may break easily.

being careful DO NOT put your hand where you can t see into, eg, a rubbish bin, long grass DO NOT touch the needle tip of the syringe DO NOT put the cap back onto the needle tip DO NOT break the needle tip off the syringe DO NOT pick up more than one syringe at a time DO NOT hold the syringe container whilst putting a syringe in it DO NOT put syringes down the toilet, drains or gutters, in rubbish or recycling bins DO NOT overfill syringe disposal containers, fill only to the recommended level

how to pick up syringes slow down Put on a pair of gloves Take the container to the syringe and put it on a stable surface Use a stick or tongs to push aside anything covering the syringe Pick up the syringe by the barrel, near the plunger-end Keep the needle tip facing away from you Place the syringe, needle tip first, into the container, do not overfill it Put the lid of the container on tightly and store it away, eg, a locked cupboard Wash your hands with soap and water, or use a water-free disinfectant hand gel Dispose of the syringe container correctly

syringe disposal in Greater Dandenong arrange to have syringes collected if you have cleaned up syringes and want them safely collected, call SEADS Outreach leave a clear message with all your details collection is after 6.30pm, 7 nights a week safely dispose of syringes to dispose of syringes in a sharps bin, visit SEADS Needle Syringe Program Foster St, Dandenong 9.30am 6pm Mon to Fri, 10am 2pm Sat Greater Dandenong Council customer service centres Springvale Rd, Springvale 39 Clow St, Dandenong & Paddy O Donoghue Centre 18 Buckley St, Noble Park 9am 4.30pm Mon to Fri

other disposal options syringe disposal chutes There are 24-hour, orange syringe disposal chutes in the City; similar to small charity bins. They fit up to a 2-litre sharps bin through a one-way access flap, and are on the footpath at Springvale Community Health Centre 55 Buckingham Ave, Springvale the rear car park corner - on Springvale Rd SEADS Needle Syringe Program 84 Foster St, Dandenong outside the shopfront - near the kerb syringe sharps bins Council s public toilets have a syringe sharps bin in most cubicles. These fit single syringes in their openings and are regularly serviced. There are also sharps bins in some of the City s parks and lanes (see map on reverse).

what to do in case of a needle stick injury If someone is pricked or scratched by a used syringe, it s best to stay calm and it s always useful to have a First-Aid Kit on hand, wherever you are. to care for the wound Wash gently with soap and water DO NOT squeeze or suck the wound, it doesn t help Apply an antiseptic, like iodine or dettol Put a band-aid over the wound See your Doctor within 24 hours to get advice on the risk of infection and your options For 24/7 confidential counselling and support for any drug-related concern, free call DirectLine

blood borne viruses and the community If anyone is pricked by a syringe that was left in a public place, it is important to know that the chance of being infected with a blood borne virus like HIV, Hepatitis or Tetanus, is very, very low. Recent research suggests there is a greater risk of contracting Tetanus this way than HIV. In Australia, there are only three known cases of Hepatitis C being transmitted through a needle stick injury from a syringe left in a public place. And worldwide, there are no documented cases of anyone contracing HIV this way.

working with the community This card is produced by Greater Dandenong Council, proudly working in partnership with Alcohol & Other Drugs Advisory Committee adac A Council, Victoria Police and community partnership. Report concerns about alcohol and drug issues in public places. Noble Park / Keysborough Community Drug Action Forum A community forum working to reduce local area harms and improve safety.
