Cochlear Baha SoundArc Hearing that moves you For professionals
Not the best demo experience Headband Testband Not comfortable or stylish Unsuitable for everyday wear Not optimised for feedback
Softband improved the demo experience A larger contact surface area improves sound transmission 1 and comfort. Average force transmission measured on Artificial Mastoid, Baha 5 Power on Softband (@2N), Headband (@4N) and Testband (@6N) Softband Testband Headband The Baha SoftWear Pad s memory foam adapts to the contours of the head, maximising the contact surface and evenly distributing pressure. 1. 4 User needs remain For children Softband is optimal for 0-2 year-olds. Older children don t always like it and want a cooler device. For adults A discreet option to try outside the clinic. For professionals A more stylish demo option for patients during their trial period

Baha SoundArc First Experience Program UK results - 10/09/2017
First Experience Program UK OBJECTIVES Investigate clinical and user experience in a clinic and home test situation TARGET Candidates evaluating the Baha 5 system (age >18) Softband users looking for an alternative wearing option (age >5) SET UP Clinic test (30-60 min trial, questionnaire) After the Clinic test a subset of patients continued with an at Home test (on average 9 days, questionnaire) PARTICIPANTS- UK NewCastle Manchester Chester Sheffield Total number of fittings 31 patients reported from the CLINIC TEST situation London 24 patients reported from the HOME TEST situation
CLINIC TEST N= 31 patients Age group Mean age of adults was 49 years (18-85 years) and mean age of children was 10 years (7-15 years). All children were Softband users, while among adults majority was demoing Baha sound processors. Clinic test purpose Type of hearing loss
CLINIC TEST N= 31 patients The Baha 5 and Baha 5 Power were the most used sound processors. The most common SoundArc size was Medium (M) 51%. Three children required a Small (S) and two adults required an extra large (XL). Participants where asked to rate the loudness from 1 (too soft) to 5 (too loud). Given this scale 73% of participants rated the loudness as 3 (just right).
CLINIC TEST Professional Fitting Experience N= 31 Ease of Correct Connector disc placement on the head Professionals stated it was easy to get the Connector Disc to sits flush against the head. Adjusting the SoundArc was required in half of the sessions to improve the fitting. According to the comments received it was more difficult to find the correct placement when the patients had long hair. Usually, a session lasted min, including fitting the SoundArc on the head (5-20 min), programming the sound processor and performing a speech test. A contralateral Connector Disc to improve comfort was never requested.
CLINIC TEST Patient experience N= 31 CLINIC TEST SoundArc Evaluation The SoundArc was well accepted by both adults and children. The average score was 4/5 3/4 participants that preferred Softband were young girls (8-15 years). They stated that SoundArc got entangled in the hair and ranked it as more difficult to use compared to Softband. 1 participants that had asymmetric head preferred to continue to use the Softband. CLINIC TEST Average score Comfort 4.0 SoundQuality 4.0 Speech understanding 4.1 Retention 4.2 Ease of use 4.0 Aesthetic 4.0 Overall experience 4.1
CLINIC TEST SoundArc vs. Softband N= 31 CLINIC TEST SoundArc vs Softband Almost 80% preferred SoundArc in terms of aesthetic. 55% thought the SoundArc was easier to use. 70% found the SoundArc more comfortable. Only 3/31 participants stated to prefer the Softband, of these, 2 were young girls (10-15 years) and Softband users.
SoundArc HOME TEST Follow up data on 24 patients Patients had home trial usage for an average of 13 days (min 5 days max 38 days) Average hours used per day 7hrs (min 2hrs max 15hrs)
HOME TEST N=24 When asking patients what next step would be after the home test: - 46% stated to continue wearing the SA, - 33% were going forward to implant - 21% opted for neither (continue with their previous solution Looudness was overall rated as just right, 52% of participants. Only one participant rated it as very low (during the trial it was understood that the participant was a CI candidate).
HOME TEST Patient experience N=24 Overall 84% rated the SoundArc experience as adequate to very good. 60% rated comfort as adequate to very good More than 90% rated sound quality and speech understanding as adequate or better 5/15 adults experienced that the SoundArc did not stay in place and that it pulled the hair HOME TEST Average score Comfort 3.4 Sound Quality 4 Speech understanding 4.1 Retention 3.6 Ease of use 3.8 Aesthetic 3.2 Overall experience 3.6
HOME TEST SoundArc vs. Softband N=12/24 Overall more than 70% participants preferred the SoundArc over the Softband. Hearing Performance 90% rate as equal to or better than Softband
HOME TEST Confidence rate N=24 Confidence rating Home 77% Work/school 86% Public 67% Car 72% Activities 73%
Conclusion (1/2) The results show a positive picture. Overall, SoundArc was liked among users both in the clinic test and home test. According to comments, the most enthusiastic users were adult men. Finding a good fit required more adjustments of the band in half of the cases. SoundArc was easier to fit on patients with short hair, while the tips tended to get entangled in long hair. Among the children, 6 out of 8 girls that were Softband users, preferred the Softband and reported it was more difficult to use SoundArc due to entanglement. SoundArc can be more difficult to fit smaller or heads with cranio-facial abnormalities. In such cases, Softband is recommended.
Conclusion (2/2) Out of the 16 adults participating in the home test: 6 chose to continue using the SoundArc, 6 decided to get an implanted solution 4 decided not to go for bone conduction (2 patients did not get enough amplification, 1 decided to keep using their current CROS aid and one did not give a reason). Out of the 8 children participating in the home test: 5 chose to continue using the SoundArc, 2 chose to get an implanted solution and 1 already had an abutment but wanted to try the SoundArc.
To think about when doing a SA fitting Key steps for an optimal SA fitting 1. SoundArc should be placed above the ears and follow the contour of the head 2. The tips should sit slightly in front of the pinna 3. The Connector disc should sit flush on the head. It should not wobble. 4. Give time to get a correct fitting. It is not a plug and play device! Fitting SoundArc can be difficult if the recipient has: Head with cranio-facial abnormalities (difficult to place SA correctly) Long hair and a lot of hair (difficult to see placement, hair weight on the SoundArc could impact placement and retention) Long thin hair and small head (difficult to place the Connector disc, risk that the hair get entangled in the band) Recipient that can t adjust by him/her self the SoundArc (dexterity problems, users shall be able to adjust the fitting according to their needs) Recipient that is a happy Softband user Fitting SoundArc is easier if the recipient has: Short hair (increased visibility Connector disc easier to place) Symmetric head shape Unhappy Softband user

Quotes from users UK CMR I like that it goes behind the head. This is 100% better than Softband. Much better than other headbands as much easier to hide it in/under the hair. I wouldn't make any changes or it wouldn't stay on my head! I would feel uncomfortable going out in public with a Softband, but OK to wear SoundArc out.
