Regular heroin use increased more than 5x between 2000 and 2012! Heroin has been around since it was created by chemists hoping to find a less addictive form of morphine, but heroin addiction soon became a more serious problem. The purity of heroin was 5% during the 1970 s. By 2011, the purity of heroin increased to 64%. 1

Now: Over 75% are middle-class suburbananites who started with legally prescribed narcotics before turning to heroin. HEROIN USE IN THE WORKPLACE The Effects Accidents Companies report that many of the workers involved in workrelated accidents later tested positive for heroin or other opioids. Impairment Workplace use may cause delays and impairment of physical and mental functions; drowsiness and sedation, slowed reflexes/breathing and irregular heartbeat. Screen potential employees for drug use using the most effective testing method to identify repeat drug users that includes the expanded opiate panel. Maintain a post-accident drug screening policy. Train all supervisory personnel to recognize the signs of potential abuse and maintain standardized reasonable suspicion testing policies. Document every incident in writing and enlist another manager as a witness when confronting an employee with a potential problem abuse. Maintain a good Employee Assistance Program (EAP.) Remember drug addiction is a medical disability. Increased options for treatment increase likelihood of abusers seeking help. EMPLOYEE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Provide details of the drug-free workplace policy Educate about the nature of drug and alcohol addiction and its impact on work performance, and health and personal life Outline the type of help available Provide forums for employee education, including: home mailings, workplace displays, brown-bag lunches, guest speakers, new employee orientation sessions, etc. 6
