13 NEEDLE LENGTH & GAUGE Key points: Needle gauge (G) is the thickness of the needle 30G (thinnest), 21G (thickest) Try choose the shortest and thinnest needle 13

14 WHAT NEEDLE/SYRINGE TO USE WHEN? Depends on: Accessibility to supplies What drug will be injected Location of injection site on body Condition of the veins (Harm Reduction Coalition, 2009) 14

15 GUIDELINES FOR USING WHAT NEEDLE Higher Gauge 27,28,29 or 30 gauge insulin needles Injecting in small veins like in hands and feet New injectors Lower Gauge Intramuscular injections - 21,22, 23 or 25 gauge Piercing 14, 16, 18 gauge Steroids and hormones need lower gauge, thicker needles 15

16 NEEDLE TIP LENGTH Needle tips typically used for injection into a vein are ½ inch Longer needle tips (5/8, 1 inch) needed for intramuscular injections 16

17 SYRINGE VOLUME Standard insulin syringe contains 1 cc (1 ml) Why need a larger volume syringe? Shake n bake Group purchase and group mixing of drug solution (front and back loading) 17

20 HOW MANY ARE NEEDED? Asses a clients needs: Drug of choice Frequency of injecting How often can they visit your site Some estimates suggest that approximately 1000 needles are needed per injection drug user per year 20

22 COOKERS Sterile Spoon - better protection from burns Cookers comes with filter and dry swab Pros and cons to crushing pills and drawing up liquid 22

23 WATER 2ml water for injection meets BBR, some clients are hesitant to change 3ml water for inhalation economical, pours well 23

24 FILTERS Loose cotton clients use to them, misconceptions, time consuming for sites Blister package sterile, meet BBR, convenient for sites 24

25 ALCOHOL SWABS Looks different but it is the same product Need minimum 2 for every injection Do not use in a circular motion! 25

26 VIT C (ASCORBIC ACID) Smaller package reduces likelihood of using too much! 26

29 DISPOSAL AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Store equipment in a clean, dry environment to avoid moisture penetrating the packaging Rotate inventory to ensure that the shelf life of the product does not expire prior to distribution to clients Dispose of equipment in a way that meets local regulations 29
