2 Scholar What do you consider substance abuse and why?
3 Smoking marijuana is a form of substance abuse. Taking prescription medication not prescribed by your physician is not substance abuse. Taking diet pills to keep from eating is substance abuse. Sniffing fumes from aerosol cans is not substance abuse Taking over the counter medication every night for over a month because you cannot get to sleep without it, is a form of substance abuse.
4 Substance: Refers to medications, illegal drugs, and toxins. Some of these substances have an intoxicating effect, desired by the user, and can have either stimulating or depressive effects on the body.
5 Substance Abuse: Use of chemical, drug, or toxin for non-medical purpose or continued pathological use of medication. Any pattern of substance use which results in repeated adverse social consequences related to drug taking. Fore example: Failure to meet school, family, work obligations.
6 Need 9 volunteers (can make more than one group of nine if want everyone to participate) The students should get into a circle (holding hands or holding a piece of rope) Now make a triangle with equal sides. One person in the triangle will take 5 steps forward. And one person in the triangle will take 3 steps back.
7 What has happened to the triangle? It changes shape each time someone moves because of the connection which exists within the triangle. Is there any way to move and not disturb the shape or balance of the triangle? No. This is a similar effect that substance abuse has on people other than the user. It is impossible for one person s substance abuse not to affect others (family, friends, and community) because of the connections and existence of ties that bind communities, families, and friends.
8 By the end of today s lesson you will be able to describe the potential effects that substance abuse has on people in addition to the user and on the community. You will be able to predict the effects substance abuse has on society as well. You will understand that substance abuse is not just a personal problem, but has a much larger impact on family, friends, and the community and on society at large.
9 When a person abuses alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs it creates a ripple effect that reaches those close to him/her, those in the community and beyond. Although costs to the individual user are the critical focus of substance abuse prevention, the effects on others cannot be avoided or dismissed.
10 Motor vehicle crashes and Acts of violence The cost to people who purchase motor vehicles Health insurance policies Cost to health care facilities Employers suffer productivity loss Families who must repair physical and emotional damage caused by user
11 Communities as a whole must spend a considerable amount of time and effort on damage caused by the abuser which can be quite costly. Society as a whole suffers from the use of illegal substances by its citizens. Global increases in problems of illicit drugs both reflect and contribute to political and international tensions. In essence: drug use is NOT just a personal problem.
12 Look at your handout (appendix 1) and can you think of a common related to all of these items. Answer: Substance abuse Choose one of individual/group and write a short narrative on how they may be affected by substance abuse.
13 Data shows us that substance abuse: Increases accidents Premature deaths Health care costs Insurance costs responsible for many hours of lost work hours. Robbery Murder Assault Increased cost for law enforcement, legal fees, and jail time
14 The negative effects of the substance abuser spread to those around him/her and beyond. For example: Female abusers are more likely to give birth to children with disabilities and addictions. These families incur higher childcare and education costs. Unintended injuries from alcohol abuse is the leading cause of death in the U.S.
15 The risks for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse is much higher among substance abusers. Any type of illicit injection drug use carries the risks of HIV infection, or contracting HEP B, and HEP C. These infections can be passed through sexual contact or through the sharing of needles. Financial and social cost involved.
16 I need 10 volunteers Each needs to select an index card If you are holding a card with a blue dot you represent the seven of ten teenagers who will not use illegal drugs. (non-users) If you are holding a card with a red dot you are 3 of 10 teenagers (ages 13-19) who will experiment with illegal drugs before adulthood.
17 The three students remaining will pick three additional students to: User 1: pick a student to represent a parent or guardian User 2: pick a student to represent a future employer who is also a tax paying citizen of the community User 3: pick a student to represent a brother/sister/friend
18 What are ways the user is affected? Would substance abuse affect the health insurance or benefits of others whom he or she works? Would accidents be more likely to occur if an employee were under the influence of an illegal substance or alcohol while at the workplace?
19 Look back at your narrative Is your opinion still the same as before? Why?
