Quarter 1/3 Decision-Making Skills (These objectives can be incorporated into all areas of health throughout the course.) Explain the six steps of the decision-making process. Distinguish between short-term and long-term goals. Identify various refusal skills. Apply refusal skills to a significant health issue or problem. Critically judge health products advertised in the media. Health Care Services and Wellness (These objectives can be incorporated into all areas of health throughout the course.) Explain the mental, physical, social, and emotional needs necessary to maintain good health. Define wellness. Describe various influences on a person's health and wellness. Define body image, self-concept, and self-esteem. Develop strategies for improving their body image, self-concept, and self-esteem. Describe the need for adequate rest. Explain the importance of proper hygiene. Formulate a personal health care plan. Explain the need for regular health check-ups. Identify local agencies devoted to health care.nutrition and Physical Activity. Nutrition and Physical Activity Examine how physical activity and diet are essential in maintaining a healthy body. Describe how the respiratory system interacts with the other body systems. Describe the parts of the circulatory system with their functions. Identify precautions needed for a healthy circulatory system. Discuss disorders related to the circulatory system. Describe the parts of the digestive system. 3 Substance Use and Abuse Define the term "drug." Distinguish among over-the-counter, prescription, and illegal drugs. Explain the basic guidelines for proper use of medicine. Outline the addiction process. Evaluate the consequences of illegal drug use. State reasons to be drug free. Explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of tobacco on the body. Explain the effects of tobacco campaigns on a teen's decision to smoke. Identify strategies by which persons can stop tobacco use. Explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of alcohol on the body. Discuss reasons why alcohol is frequently used by adolescents. Discuss the perils of drinking and driving. Explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of marijuana on the body. Explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of methamphetamines on the body. Explain the physical, mental, and emotional effects of designer drugs on the body. Identify community agencies which assist persons with substance abuse problems. Diseases Differentiate between infectious (communicable) and non-infectious (noncommunicable) diseases. Identify types of disease-causing organisms. Identify ways in which infectious diseases are spread. Identify some of the symptoms of the most common infectious diseases. Describe ways to prevent infectious diseases from spreading to others. Identify some of the symptoms of common non-infectious diseases. Explain the relationship between risk factors and non-infectious diseases. Identify various strategies for preventing non-infectious diseases. Describe common hereditary diseases. Describe common types of cancer.
4 Quarter 2/4 Note: Sexual activity is any form of sexual contact including, oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse. Students should understand that, when sexual activity is discussed, all of these forms are included under the term "sexual activity." Unintentional Injuries and Violence Identify risky behaviors that may cause personal injury. Define, bullying, cyber-bullying, sexting, and harassment. Analyze the effects of bullying, cyber-bullying, and harassment on an individual. Identify ways to protect him/herself from bullying, cyberbullying, and harassment. Define domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Evaluate the impact domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking has on the individual, family, and society. Identify ways to protect him/herself from domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. Identify the importance of the first responder. Perform psychomotor skills related to Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as outlined in the American Heart Association Guidelines. Discuss the purpose of an AED, how it is used, and the safety involved in using the device. Illustrate first-aid procedures for temperature-related conditions. Changes During Adolescence Recognize physical changes which occur during adolescence. Describe mental and emotional changes related to puberty. Use correct anatomical terms for the reproductive systems. Recognize the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive system. Maintain positive and open communication with parents/guardians. Explain the importance of seeking advice from a trusted adult or medical professional when concerned about problems related to the reproductive system. Human Development and Pregnancy Define sexual activity. Identify sources of influence related to sexual activity. List physical, emotional, and social consequences of sexual activity. Describe the process of fertilization. List the signs and stages of pregnancy. Explain the physical, social, and emotional changes that parents experience during pregnancy. Discuss the importance of early prenatal care. Identify various substances that may be harmful to the mother and developing fetus. Understand the causes of fetal alcohol syndrome.
5 Explain the physical, emotional, and social implications of a teenage pregnancy. Determine the various responsibilities involved in parenting. Healthy Relationships Define healthy peer relationships. Evaluate influences on relationships. Compare a healthy versus an unhealthy dating relationship. Develop personal limits in order to protect oneself from dangerous situations. Understand statutory rape pursuant to Nevada law. Analyze the consequences of violating the age of consent in accordance with Nevada law. Apply conflict management techniques. Understand family relationships. Abstinence and Contraceptive Methods Define abstinence. List the physical, emotional, and social benefits of abstinence. Practice refusal skills strategies to reinforce the decision to remain abstinent. Define contraceptives. Compare the benefits of abstinence to the effectiveness of common contraceptive methods. Discuss the role of abstinence in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Explore the positive and negative implications regarding the use of various contraceptive methods. Discuss resources where contraceptive methods can be obtained. Discuss with parent/guardian how to obtain contraceptive methods. Sexually Transmitted Infections Describe how sexually transmitted infections are acquired. Describe the signs, symptoms, and prevention of various sexually transmitted infections. Explain that some sexually transmitted infections are curable and some are incurable. Define HIV and AIDS. Recognize that HIV is not transmitted by casual contact.
