3 SROBP Substance Related Offending Behaviour Programme Programme Structure Rolling Format programme runs continuously Duration: 4-6 months Responsive to individual s needs and learning style Delivery: 3 sessions per week, 2 hours per session Group size: Maximum of 8 participants at any one time 2 facilitators per session Supervisor and treatment manager Post session notes and post programme reports

4 SROBP Substance Related Offending Behaviour Programme Aims of the Programme SROBP is a cognitive behavioural programme designed to address substance related offending behaviour. The programme aims to reduce re-offending among those participating in it by increasing their insight into the factors that initiated and maintain their substance related offending behaviour and learning ways to manage these factors by developing new prosocial skills. 6 SROBP Substance Related Offending Behaviour Programme Selection Criteria The programme targets medium, high and very high risk offenders, based on ratings obtained in the Level of Service Case Management Inventory (LSCMI). Anyone who misuses any substance (e.g. drugs, alcohol, solvents, prescription medication) as long as their substance use and offending behaviour are related. Those currently misusing substances if they are able to participate meaningfully.

7 SROBP Substance Related Offending Behaviour Programme Exclusion Criteria There is no link between their substance use and offences Has learning difficulties Active mental illness, that is not stabilised using prescribed medication Literacy difficulties

8 FIRST STEPS This programme is designed for people who require help in motivation for and maintaining a DRUG FREE life style within prison and on release. The programme consists of 40 Sessions scheduled to run over a 4 week period 10 x sessions per week Morning Sessions Programme Sessions Afternoon Sessions Activities: PT, Relaxation Classes, Healthy eating, Outside Agencies, Naloxone training, Steroid Awareness, NPS Awareness The aims of the programme are to: Learn about drugs and associated effects Identify the Costs & Benefits of Drug Use Identify HIGH RISK situations Manage difficult situations effectively through Problem Solving Skills Improve Communication Skills Increase Coping Mechanisms Maintaining Change / Support The criteria for applying to the First Steps programme are as follows: Identified / Significant Drug Problem Motivated to MAINTAIN A DRUG FREE LIFESTYE Basic Literacy skills Ability to work in a group setting & complete all tasks and assignments

9 ALCOHOL AWARENESS The programme consists of 8 Sessions scheduled to run over a 2 week period 4 morning sessions per week Aims of the programme To give prisoners a basic awareness of the effects alcohol can have on their life including health and offending. To assess the prisoner s knowledge of alcohol using a range of questions, reinforcing information and dispelling any myths they may have had about alcohol. To give recommended levels of alcohol use and look at the harmful effects alcohol may have on the body due to excessive drinking. To give participants the opportunities to explore and gain an insight into their personal alcohol use. Identifying the costs in relationships and to the community through their offending behaviour. Allow participants to explore their drinking habits, identify high risk situations or patterns in their drinking which have caused problems in the past, then work through these problems using an effective problem solving process. Facilitators can then provide further information on alcohol related issues (stress, anxiety, low self-esteem) and make appropriate referrals, on request, to appropriate support agencies.

11 Steroid Awareness By the end of this module participants will have: An understanding of the legal statuses, the SPS policies and the testing protocols concerning the use of these substances. An increased knowledge of commonly used substances with a particular focus on the potential risks and effects posed by their use. Discussed the identification of potential use of these substances and explored which sanctions may be appropriate.
