Students will use the sea animal words in relation to various activities. 1 class session of 30 minutes Vocabulary Spanish Negro Blanco Rojo Los dientes Los brazos Spanish El pulpo La ballena El tiburón La foca El delfín El camarón La langosta El cangrejo La estrella de mar El caballo de mar El aguamar El pingüino La pastinaca

Which sea animal is make-believe? What animal is the largest mammal in the sea? What is your favorite sea animal? My favorite sea animal is La sirena De qué color es el pingüino? Cuál animal del mar tiene dientes filosos? Cuál animal del mar tiene ocho brazos? Cuáles animales del mar encuentras en Sea World? Cuál animal del mar es de fantasía? Cuál animal es el mamífero más grande del mar? Cuál es tu animal del mar favorito? Mi animal del mar favorito es. Materials and Resources (Including Technology, Links, and Attachments) Flashcards for the new vocabulary Whiteboard and dry erase marker Learning Plan PREPARATION: 0. Bring to class the picture and word sea animal flashcards for each of the new vocabulary words. (Available at the end of this lesson.). If you so desire, put magnets on the back of these flashcards so you can display them on the whiteboard for the duration of the lesson. REVIEW AND INTRODUCTION [10 MINUTES] 1. Welcome the students to Spanish class. 2. Review the words from the review vocabulary. Saying the words in Spanish one at a time and having the students repeat the words after you. Go over the English translation of each word as well. 3. Using the word flashcards begin by introducing the sea animals to the students. Show the flashcards one at a time and say each word in Spanish and have the students repeat the words after you then tell them the translation in English. Do this again, this time using the picture flashcards. ACTIVITY [20 MINUTES] 4. Ask the students the following questions, one at a time, using the sandwich method. (The sandwich method is when you say a phrase in Spanish, then English, and immediately in Spanish again.). Explain to the students that they will need to raise their hand if they know the answer. Write the question on the whiteboard after you have said it. Example:

3 THIRD GRADE, LESSON 11 SEA ANIMALS 3 Teacher asks: De que color es el pingüino? What color is the penguin? De que color es el pingüino? Student replies with the words negro and blanco If the student answering the question gives an incorrect answer, give them another opportunity to try again. If they would prefer to pass, ask for another volunteer. This is a good time to correct their pronunciation, if necessary. Repeat with the remaining questions using the sandwich method. Cuál animal del mar tiene dientes filosos? Which sea animal has sharp teeth? (Answer: tiburón) Cuál animal del mar tiene ocho brazos? Which sea animal has eight legs? (Answer: pulpo) Note: Explain to the students that in English, an octopus has legs but in Spanish, an octupus has arms. Cuáles animales del mar encuentras en Sea World? What sea animals can you find at Sea World? (Possible answers: pulpo, ballena, tiburón, foca, delfín, aguamar, pingüino and pastinaca) Cuál animal del mar es de fantasía? What sea animal is make-believe? (Answer: sirena) Bonus question: Cuál animal es el mamífero más grande del mar? What animal is the largest mammal in the sea? (Answer: La ballena azul) 5. Write the following question and answer set on the whiteboard: Cuál es tu animal del mar favorito? Which sea animal is your favorite? Mi animal del mar favorito es. My favorite sea animal is. Go over the phrases with the students, explain what they mean and have them repeat after you. 6. Explain to the students that you will ask them, one at a time, what their favorite sea animal is and they should respond in Spanish using the phrase above. 7. Say Adiós to the students and thank them for participating.
