What is Detoxification? The removal of cellular and metabolic debris from our blood and organ systems. Elimination of accumulated toxins acquired from food, water and environment. Elimination of bowel and liver toxins that negatively affect the rest of the body. 4 Healthy versus Unhealthy Cells 5 Why Should We Regularly Detox? To reduce the chemical load that accumulates over time and undermines our health, vitality and longevity. To prevent disease now and in the future To restore vitamins, minerals and enzymes To slow the aging process and optimize health To determine how many symptoms are related to lifestyle factors versus true underlying health problems. 6 2
Signs and Symptoms Associated With Toxicity Blood Test Abnormalities Skin Eruptions/Conditions Muscle and Joint Pain Fatigue Generalized Weakness Menstrual Irregularities Hormone Imbalances Sluggish Bowels Neurological Disorders Headaches Hypersensitivity Reactions Difficulty Losing Weight Fluid Retention Fingernail Changes Hair Loss Brain Fog Inability to Focus Attention 7 The Kidneys Elimination of water soluble products found in the blood. Maintains electrolyte balance. Maintains acid/base balance. 8 Infra-Red Sauna Toxins are released from the subcutaneous fat via sweating. 9 3
Benefits of the Infra-Red Sauna Safer and more tolerable than radiant heat saunas for detoxification purposes (which need very high heat 180+). Deep penetration of tissues triggering the release of stored toxins directly into the sweat. Lower sauna temperature, i.e. 90 to 120 degrees Improved microcirculation Frequency of use increases detoxification capacity 10 The Digestive System 11 Bowels - Small Intestine & Large Intestine Need to move bowels at least 1+ time per day ideally. Auto-intoxication - bowel toxins being reabsorbed back into general circulation. Assessing bowel function: Infections Candida Gluten and other food sensitivities 12 4
The Liver & Gallbladder All three need to work together 13 Liver & Gallbladder Processes toxins, metabolic by-products, drugs, chemicals and hormones. Phase I Detoxification oxidation/reduction; need for minerals; more toxic compounds. Phase II Detoxification conjugation; need for sulfur groups, amino acids and glutathione. Products are emptied into bowel for elimination
Detoxification Diet & Lifestyle What to Eliminate Processed Sugar White Flour Processed Grains Artificial Ingredients Chemical Additives Excess Caffeine Preservatives Hydrogenated Oils Rancid Oils Minimize Dairy Products Soft Drinks 16 Detoxification Diet & Lifestyle What to Include Organic Fruits & Vegetables Whole Grains Nuts & Seeds Cold-Pressed Oils Beans Organic, Free-Range Protein Sources. Wild Fish Filtered Water Herbal Teas Fresh Vegetable Juices Increase Raw Foods to 60-70% of diet. 17 Detoxification Diet & Lifestyle Exercise 4-5 times per week for 45 minutes to 60 minutes Exercise in the morning if possible Breathe, stretch, move, get outdoors 18 6
Basic Supplements for Detoxification Whole Food Concentrates. Essential Fats Highly Absorbable Multivitamin. Antioxidants Digestive Enzymes Glutathione or precursors Highly Absorbable Minerals and Trace Minerals. Probiotics Herbs to support Bowel, Liver and Kidney Detox. 19 Bowel and Liver Detoxification Helping to clear the symptom picture 20 Bowel & Liver Detox Need to support digestion, absorption and elimination from top to bottom. Digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid and bile acids support detoxification and motility moving toxins out of the body. Improving bowel motility is a key aspect of detoxing the digestive tract. Must detox the bowel first, then the liver Both the bowel and the liver have a Phase I and Phase II detox system. Systems need to be supported through adequate nutrition. 21 7
Step I Bowel Detox Major pathway of elimination Poor bowel function effects many aspects of our health. Products from Phase I and Phase II liver detoxification are released into the bowel for elimination. Bowel functions as a detox organ itself with its own Phase I and Phase II detox system. If the bowels are sluggish, the body becomes autointoxicated by products that are meant to be eliminated. 22 Step II Liver Detox Detox the liver after the bowel All detox products from the liver ultimately move into the bowel for elimination. Liver detox with poor bowel function leaves you feeling worse. Optimizing digestion and bowel function will support liver detox by opening pathways of elimination in the liver. 23 Step II Liver Detox The liver is the first organ to receive both nutrients and toxins from the GI tract. The liver excretes toxins from the blood into the bile where it is stored in the gallbladder then ultimately released into the bowel. Working on the bowel first will make liver detoxing easier and patients generally feel the effects of detoxing the bowel right away. 24 8
Dietary Guidelines While Detoxing What not to eat: No gluten foods, minimal grains, no white potatoes No processed or packaged foods No food additives or preservatives Alcohol Anything with excess sugar in the form of glucose, sucrose, dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup.
